A Diamond in the Rough

Hi, I’m Evan and I love playing baseball it’s my favorite sport. When I was 12 years old I got into a car accident my dad was driving unfortunately he didn’t make it. I ended up getting paralyzed from the waist down which left me in a wheelchair now my mom takes care of me. I’m a senior in high school and I have a friend Spencer and I use the term friend very loosely he always makes fun of me. We both play for our high school baseball team even though I’m in a wheelchair coach doesn’t cut me any slack.

Steven and I were talking about which colleges had the best baseball scholarships and we both said we wanted to go to Lendon University it was the best school for sports especially baseball. Steven said” I applied to Lendon and I’m waiting to hear back from them.”” I’m sure I’ll get accepted because I’m the best player on the team.” He reminded me he was the best player all the time it was so annoying. “Well I applied to Lendon too wouldn’t that be cool if both of us got accepted?”

“No, you won’t get in you really think they’ll take someone in a wheelchair?” Steven said.” I’m just as good as you are.”” Whatever dude I don’t think it’ll happen.” I doubted myself when he said those words and I thought maybe he was right. My mom picked me up from baseball practice I told her Steven and I got into a little argument. She told me” Evan don’t listen to Steven he’s just jealous you keep your eye on the prize and you’ll make it baby I know you will.”

That instantly made me feel better I forgot about the whole thing and asked her what’s for dinner? She replied” I’m taking you out for pizza.” Mom and I talked over pizza and I went to sleep when I got home because I was tired from baseball practice. A couple of weeks went by and I still haven’t heard anything from Lendon Steven was bragging at school that he got accepted.” I told you I would make it.” “That’s great news man I’m happy for you.” Steven continued to rub it in my face that he got accepted.

My mom picked me up from practice and she handed me a letter in the car it was from Lendon. I waited till I got home to open it because I didn’t want to jinx myself by opening it too soon. My mom said” go on honey open it see what it says.” I read the opening sentence to myself it read” Evan thank you for applying to Lendon University at the moment we are unable to accept you for a baseball scholarship due to limited positions.” I couldn’t hold back the tears I told my mom I wasn’t accepted and I cried uncontrollably.

She held me while I wept she said” they don’t know talent when they see it” that night I cried myself to sleep. The next day I told Steven that I didn’t get accepted he said” well better luck next time” with a smirk on his face. I wasn’t in the mood to argue I just ignored him this time. When I was at practice a scout from Lendon was there watching me the whole time I didn’t even know it. He asked to speak with me and he explained that he was interested in giving me baseball scholarship he asked me if I was still interested.

I replied” yes sir that’s sounds great.” I told my mom the good news when she picked me up from practice she was so proud of me. I found out Steven wasn’t accepted because he didn’t have a 3.0 GPA. I later went on to play professional baseball for the New York Knights. Steven taught me a lesson never give up on your dreams no matter what anybody tells you.
