Do you believe that sometimes laughter can be the best medicine?!?
Q: MEXICO CITY – Televisa is cutting all “nonessential” kisses from its soap operas. A song called the “Influenza Cumbia” is climbing the charts. Cringe-worthy swine flu jokes are spreading faster than the illness ever could. As Mexicans lock themselves inside in fear of the virus, they can’t help but have a little fun with it as well. The surgical masks that Mexicans have donned by the millions have become canvases for creativity, with some adorning their protective coverings with painted-on monkey mouths, outsized mustaches or “kissy lips.” Newspapers offer smiley cutouts for people to paste to their masks, and some drivers have fashioned masks for their cars. Dog lovers walk the streets of Mexico City with matching masks for their pooches, though doctors have yet to confirm that chihuahua-to-chihuahua transmission is a major public health threat. Mexico’s ebullient, spontaneous culture is still trying to adjust to the new anti-flu campaign, in which kissing, hugging, handshakes, eating on the street and standing in crowded places — all part of daily life in this city of 20 million — are now discouraged. There might not be much traffic on Mexico City’s streets, but gallows humor about what some call “The Aporkalypse” has been circulating around the metropolis. “Did you hear that Mexico has become a world power?” goes one joke. “When it sneezes, the whole world gets the flu.” Mexico’s music culture has also embraced a lighthearted approach to the epidemic. The band Agrupacion Carino came out with the song “Influenza Cumbia” just two days after the health alert was issued. The lyrics are not the most sophisticated, with references to Superman and Indiana Jones. “It’s better to commit suicide with tacos,” the singer croons to a bouncy synthesizer. “They say it’s the perfect flu. They don’t know Mexico City folks live in the smog.” And like swine flu, dark humor has spread beyond Mexico’s borders. A U.S. company has rolled out T-shirts featuring a pig-shaped Mexican flag. “I went to Mexico and all I got was swine flu,” it reads. And of course the Internet is alive with dark, swine-flu fun. In a game called “SwineFighter,” players blast viral-looking piggies with a hypodermic needle. And what global catastrophe would be complete without its own Facebook page? Actually, “Swine Flu” has several pages on the popular social networking site. The most popular — set up April 26 with a profile picture of a cute white pig — has accumulated more than 20,000 fans. The page’s creator, who identifies himself only as John, boasts on the page: “There’s more people infected on Facebook than in real life.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090501/ap_on_re_la_am_ca/lt_swine_flu_humor

This is getting kind of serious… Medical conditions that match the symptoms?
Q: Alright, I’ve been to a few doctors but they don’t take me very seriously… They’ve run blood tests but that’s about it. No serious examinations. The last doctor I saw believed the pain may be a result of depression… But I really don’t think that’s it at all. You see, I understand fully what depression aches feel like as recently I’ve been experiencing those, too. I don’t think the depression is causing the issues, I believe the issues are resulting in depression.Depression pains aren’t really sharp, severe… They’re just a “God, I don’t want to do this anymore” type of thing. You’re weary, sluggish, hurting all over without a direct source of pain. The thing I’m reporting is not like that at all. I have constant “stabbing, shooting” sensations all over my body, but I can pin point them easily. Mostly they circulate around my wrists, thighs, where the back becomes the bottom, back of the neck, shoulders, top of the feet, joints… Gah. There are a lot of spots, but it isn’t psychosomatic (I’m aware I have mental problems, I just don’t think this is one of them). It’s cutting edge and it doesn’t go away.I also have a difficulty with sleeping. I go days feeling tired, but not being able to lose consciousness. I have obsessive water drinking habits, too. I’m CONSTANTLY thirsty and much colder then I should be.The nurse who checked my pulse prior commented that it was extremely strong and two nights ago I went to a slumber party and my friend was next to me, almost asleep, and she noted that my heart beat faster then any other person she’d known. I mention this only because I wonder if it has some correlation to the fact that I have “miny heart attacks” (my brother’s choice of words). What happens is basically the same as any heart attack but there is no permanent damage and I never go to a hospital. My wrist starts to sting like a big needle is being jabbed right into the vein, and then my chest starts searing and I can’t breathe, and my head throbs and I’ll fall down, normally my left leg goes down first. Normally it happens once every two or so days, and lasts a few seconds. Recently, it’s been occuring so much more and it lasts longer until my eyes are swimming. I heard that irregular heart shape may be the cause of this issue…?Another symptom (may or may not be related) is that I’ve been constipated for years. I also have these “twitches”. Involuntary muscle movements… My eye will spazz out or sometimes it’s more severe and my whole body will convulse, my eyes go behind my head. It doesn’t really HURT but it feels like electricity is surging through me.I have bad headaches.Gah, with all the things happening, I don’t know what to list here as a symptom. These days I just don’t FEEL well. Is this all really just depression or something else entirely? If you know what, please include it in your response. I have to get more blood work done soon and if I can, I want to have a list of possible illnesses she can check me for.If you have any specific questions, please ask. I really need a second opinion.
A: Okay, you need to go and see a specialist….possibly someone that specializes. I would start with Rheumatology. Do your fingers and toes turn colors when you are cold (purple, red or white)? Could be Raynauds. Raynauds may or not be associated with any other disease, but could be possible. Don’t take Raynauds lightly, as if you don’t take care of yourself properly…could hurt yourself in the long run. In the mean-time, I would ask your primary to do an EKG of your heart. Actually, I think I would demand that it be done. you have a right to seek the medical treatment/testing you see necessary. It takes a long time to get into a Rheumatologist. I too am going through some similar symptoms myself and understand your frustrations. Don’t give up, you will find someone that will listen!!!Good luck!
What type of remedy do I have when a condo Mgr has breached my confidentiality and released my medical info?
Q: I released confidential health info to my condo manager, because I wanted to get advice on how to handle things with my neighbor below my unit, since I am now wheelchair bound and the floors in our building do not prevent the sound from traveling through the floor no matter how quiet you move around the unit. I included a confidential disclaimer on the e-mail. He took this e-mail and submitted it to the condo board and to the unit owner below me without my permission causing a great deal of animosity. It is stressful enough knowing that I am wheelchair bound and suffering from a debilitating illness, but to have my information circulated to the masses has caused me a great deal of emotional distress. He also told me that it was my duty to be quiet and make sure the condo is 75% carpeted even if I have a wheelchair in accordance with the condo rules. My condo is 75% covered, but are there any exceptions for people with disabilities, because it is very difficult to wheel around on carpet. I am depressed, stressed and I do not know what laws govern my issues and what rights I have as a person with a new disability. Please help me.
A: look around for a condo-lawyer, someone who has specialized in this area. It may also be a infringement of the American Disabilities Act, check there also and if worst comes to worst, invite the mgr. over for coffee and spike it w/ exlax, I may be kidding. You should also speak, if you haven’t with the other tenant in a letter informing them you were not being hostile but had hopes your letter would resolve the problem and it was misused by this manager.
