If the process occurs slowly a large amount of fluid can accumulate – not likely due the VSD, but can occur secondary to an infection of the heart muscle (pericarditis or myocarditis). It would be fairly easy to determine whether this “congestion” is due to the heart condition by doing an echocardiogram, Xray and blood test. My guess is that all these were done in the hospital and your daughter is more likely suffering from many of the respiratory bugs that get all kids this time of year.
