Where Should You Put the Microwave?

Almost everyone has one. I probably couldn’t cook without one. Yes, microwave ovens have become a fixture in the modern kitchen. However, placement of the little fellow can be a little tricky. Here are a few good options for working your microwave into your kitchen decor with a bit of style.

• Eye Level Shelves

Over-the-range microwave installations are pretty common. They put the unit at eye level and in close proximity of your other cooking surfaces. However, have you ever tried to install one of those beasts? Every time I’ve attempted to hang one myself, I left the project feeling less than comfortable – secretly praying it doesn’t fall off the wall with the close of a door.

An easier alternative for placing your microwave at eye level is to purchase a less expensive counter type unit and sliding it into cabinet shelf space. The added benefit is that you can add cabinet doors to hide the microwave when not in use.

• Counter Cabinet Alcove

If you want your microwave at counter height – but, want a built-in look, just extend a wall cabinet all the way down to your counter to create a space that houses your microwave. It creates a more tailored look on the counter.

• Under the Counter Built-In Cabinet Space

A new trend in microwave placement is to mount it under the counter. Carve out a niche in your base cabinets and pop in your unit. The added benefit here is the microwave will be in spot where you kids can reach it, too.

• In Your Center Island

Center islands are also a terrific place for a hardworking unit. With all the prep work you do on your center island, it’s a welcome location – negating the need to walk back and forth to the microwave when you need to melt or warm up ingredients along the way.

• Caddy Corner on a Counter

Here’s one final option when you don’t have the space or money to create an alcove in your cabinets for a microwave. If you have to set a microwave on your countertop, place it caddy corner to allow it to blend into the landscape. Corner placement will make it look like you put your microwave in a place of honor instead of just one more thing lined up along the counter.
