The Scoop on the Emmytones at the 2011 Emmy Awards

If you watched the 2011 Emmy Awards, you probably noticed the seemingly makeshift singing group that was formed for the evening called the Emmytones. And, if you are an avid TV watcher, you likely saw some familiar faces, even if you didn’t immediately know their names. Here’s the low down on the actors who formed the self-deprecating and television-mocking (yet still in tune) group.

The elegant Cobie Smulders, who is known for her role as Robin in “How I Met Your Mother,” may be new to Hollywood stardom, but she was a pro as she sang along with Jane in the opening number with her fellow Emmytones. She will soon be seen on the big screen in “The Avengers.”

Wilmer Valderrama first made a name for himself in “That ’70s Show,” and he’s recently made a splash in “Royal Pains.” Singing along with the group throughout the evening, including at the introduction of the combined reality and variety category, he displayed his willingness to make fun of the medium that led him to such success. He will soon be appearing in a few feature films as well, including “The Girl Is In Trouble.”

Comedic actor Joel McHale also hit some high notes with the Emmytones as they continued to sing into the night, including the prelude to a display of drama clips, as reported by IMDB. Joel is known for playing Jeff in “Community,” but he was also recently seen in the feature film, “Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D,” which was released with a sniffing card for a total immersion cinematic experience.

Also gracing the stage with the Emmytones was Zachary Levi who plays the title role of Chuck in “Chuck.” The dashing young actor was originally from Louisiana, and he has been slowly rising to fame since he appeared as Adam in “Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie” in 2002.

Taraji P. Henson, the acclaimed star of both stage and screen, also performed as part of the Emmytones from the start of the ceremony to its finish, including their performance about movies and mini-series that was interrupted by none other than LL Cool J. Henson has been in feature films like “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and television series like “Boston Legal.”

Known for playing the hilarious, yet quirky character of Meredith Palmer on “The Office,” funny woman Kate Flannery also performed with the group. They were there to perform with Jane throughout her hilarious finale, and they helped contribute to the whole feel of the fun, unusual Emmy award ceremony.
