How to Use Art Journaling to Encourage Children to Read

When my child was first learning to read it was somewhat difficult. So many distractions are in the world today with digital everything, ie. video games, TV, movies, texting and so on. These things are hard to compete with when you are talking about reading for fun. Sometimes you need to think outside of the box when trying to encourage children to read books.

I took my love of art journaling and encouraged my child to create a book of her own by making art journaling books. Every aspect of the books, from the illustrations to the words were entirely thought up by her. I only helped her with the spelling. She added photos as well as drew her own pictures. It was awesome. She created several books like this and made her own library. She read these books over and over again.

I can’t tell you how effective this was to get her into the reading mood. Not only that, but she began to think of new stories to write and thus wanted to know how to spell several words to be able to get her stories on paper.

I highly recommend this method for helping children learn how to read or to get them into the mood of wanting to read regularly. The following are the general steps to creating and art journaling book.

1. Make several pages of artwork with words

2. Add photos or drawings

3. Bind them together into a book

4. Write family stories or fiction children stories

5.Now you have a book that your child has made that they can read over and over

Anyone can do this, especially children. Help your children learn to read by allowing them to create their own books filled with their own stories and art work.
