Do you think the recently passed state excise taxes on cigarettes is unfair to smokers ?
Q: Recently some states added around $.30 per pack or $3.00 per carton with another round of tax increases coming on April 1. Isn’t it unfair to tax a specific group of people !What if they started adding taxes to pizza’s because people love to eat pizza ?
A: It makes me angry!I get angrier still at those who are so naive to believe it’s all right, those who believe it’s justified to tax smokers more and more every year. Where’s their logic? If you so desperately want to stop people from smoking, make tobacco a controlled substance, make it illegal! Why don’t we? The truth of the matter is simple: Tobacco is a cash cow for state coffers. Period. All these other arguments are asinine and it’s ridiculous to me that so many accept them without question. Florida won the largest suit against the tobacco companies. The irony? At the time of the lawsuit, the greatest percentage of investments by the state of Florida was in the tobacco industry. Why? Because it was profitable. In England, I understand there is a yearly tax of $200 just to have TV. Let’s see how we like it when it happens here. There will be many such taxes to come.
To cigarette smokers – what other reasons can there be for people to smoke?
Q: The ones I can think of are these:- Being ignorant/stupid. I suppose if you are not aware of the fact that smoking increases the risk cancer to you and those around you when you smoke that might be a reason, but who doesn’t know that? It’s very clearly stated on every cigarette pack.- Not caring about one’s self and others – having some sort of mental or personality problem. If you know that you are constantly spending money with nothing to show for it except being smelly, less attractive, aging prematurely, reducing your and your loved ones’ life expectancies – but you continue to do it – then I guess it could be because you just don’t give a hoot which is really pretty unhealthy mentally.- Being too weak. Ok so you are addicted to a drug. That doesn’t mean that it is impossible to quit. People beat addictions all the time. You just have to be strong enough and have the self-discipline to do it. I predict that a lot of people will dislike this question and try to insult or attack me. Just so that you know I smoked for 10 years and quit so it’s not as if I don’t know what it’s like. I know it’s hard and I also know how worthwhile it is to accomplish the difficult task of quitting. I can’t help but wonder why people continue to do it when I see smokers these days. I suppose that for those 10 years I smoked I was some combination of the above. Maybe denial plays into it also. What other reason could there possibly be?
A: fair call
