Q: From Dr. Jon <[email protected]> This is a common scenario. A cat urinates outside the litter box – maybe on the bed, on the carpet or somewhere else in the house. This is a frequent and frustrating problem amongst cat owners. Inappropriate urination is the most common reason cats are given up to shelters, put “outside” and a common behavioral problem for which cats are euthanize.I receive so many emails about this topic that I want to discuss it today.First, let me define what I mean by inappropriate urination. In simple terms, inappropriate urination is the act of going outside of the litter box. So … the first question is, “Why do cats do that?”Well, there are several reasons cats can have inappropriate urination. It can be either a medical problem or a behavioral problem, but nothing the cat does while inappropriately urinating will tell you which type of problem it is. One thing that I’ve learned the hard way is that you NEVER want to assume which type of problem it is. That can be disastrous.Since there are a variety of behavioral problems as well as medical problems that can cause the exact same behavior, how can you tell the difference? The safest and very best thing to do is to have your cat examined by a veterinarian to determine if it is medical or behavioral. Your vet will most likely do a test on the urine, called a urinalysis, which will look for underlying medical abnormalities. They may also want to do blood work to determine kidney function and overall health.So what’s the bottom line? If your cat is going outside of the litter box, don’t assume the problem is behavioral. Cats can get several different urinary tract diseases that can cause them to go outside of the litter box. I’ve had many clients who assumed their cat had a behavioral problem causing inappropriate urination. After becoming fed up with the situation, they wanted to discuss extreme measures (such as euthanasia!). I talked them into a medical examination and found underlying urinary tract problems such as infections or bladder stones. Once those conditions were cleared up, the cat urinated appropriately inside the litter box.This poor cat was blamed, punished for months for inappropriate urination and the poor thing had a medical problem that they didn’t bother to look for. So the moral of the story is…look for medical causes first. If there are none, then you can begin to look for other reasons for the behavior.If your cat is urinating outside the box, do your cat a favor and schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. A: I agree that that’s not m=new info but I think that there are other reasons why cat misbehave and stops using the cat box the one that happens most is that the owner does not keep it clean. Cats are very clean and some of them just refuse o step in a litter that’s to dirty. A new pet in the house will also make them act out their jealousycats are very very possessive and jealous.and new comers to the household willfor sure disrupt the peace for awhile. And if none of this is the culprit of the change of behavior look for the health ones. A cat when they are in pain will isolate himself and lay in some corner alone, or start to be around you all the time, they cross your path almost making you fall, lay really close to you and yes cry all the time. One way or another they will call your attention to them, some time even negatively.so pay a little attention and you will find out whats wrong. Now pay close attention because the urination thing is no doubt a sign and a blocked urinary tract can kill ina very short time.
