Q: i get alot of sun but in the winter time my docter said to start taking vitamin d…i am like a young teen…it is now really hot and sunny lately. should i keep taking vitamin d? it is 400 ml and i take one a day. Help me out here!
A: There is a high health risk associated with consuming too much vitamin D. Vitamin D toxicity can cause nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss. It can also raise blood levels of calcium, causing mental status changes such as confusion. High blood levels of calcium also can cause heart rhythm abnormalities. Calcinosis, the deposition of calcium and phosphate in soft tissues like the kidney can be caused by vitamin D toxicity. Consuming too much vitamin D through diet alone is not likely unless you routinely consume large amounts of cod liver oil. It is much more likely to occur from high intakes of vitamin D in supplements. The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine considers an intake of 1,000 IU for infants up to 12 months of age and 2,000 IU for children, adults, pregnant, and lactating women to be the tolerable upper intake level. Daily intake above this level increases the risk of adverse health effects and is not advised.
How much Vitamin D Can I take per day?
Q: I bought this Nature Made Calcium 600 plud VitaminD3 400, I thought I should add another vitamin D 400, is that too much to take per day? What will happen if I overdose on vitamin D?Thank you for all your answers
A: I was at 24ng/ml which is far below the optimal level about 4 months ago.I started getting more sun and started on 10000IU a day for a few months and now I am at 71.4ng/ml. 10,000IU is not toxic at all.Doctor’s do not even know what Vitamin D toxicity is and have not even seen them. There was 1 case where a lawyer started taking 1000IU a day but later found out that the company didn’t dilute it so he was actually taking 1 Million IU a day so he got hypercalcemia(the only vitamin D overdose symptom)Dr. Michael Hollick from Boston University who has been researching about Vitamin D for a decade proved that 10,000IU a day for years is not toxic at all and you can make 10,000IU of Vitamin D from 15-30minutes of sun exposure.Do not take Cod Liver oil. It is not the best form of Vitamin D and people have reported side effects from it such as headache, allergic reaction from fish and mercury toxicity. Just take natural form of Vitamin D3.I take NOW FOODS Vitamin D3 5000IU once a day now and I ordered it from iherb.comReally fast shipping and cheap.Remember the optimal range is 50ng/ml – 80ng/mlLife guards usually have Vitamin D level of 100ng/ml or a bit more but it’s not a problem although if you go over 150ng/ml then it’s a problem because now you are Vitamin D intoxicated. And our body utilizes Vitamin D everyday so you have to make some form of it(either sun or supplementation)But sunlight through the window does not work because it blocks UVB which makes Vitamin D and lets in UVA, which just makes our skin burn. And sun screen blocks 99% of vitamin D production.
