What happens when you swallow gum?
Q: I dont normally swallow gum, but I happened to swallow two pieces [basically] in a row.First, I was chewing a piece and took a swig of water and swallowed it by accident. Then I was eating a Blow Pop Mini (with a little candy shell and gum inside) and was talking on the phone. I swallowed it then, too. (I didnt choke though, dont worry). What really honestly happens if you swallow gum? Does something bad only happen if you swallow TOO much gum? Thanks so much!
A: I used to be a gum swallower and was told it would never digest only to find out (via the Mythbusters!) that it isn’t true. It digests just fine and should cause you no problems what so ever. Your saliva isn’t strong enough to digest it but then again it doesn’t digest most foods. Chewing and saliva are the first digestion but the stomach acid is more than a match for any gum you might eat so have no fears 🙂

Q: I really want to know this because I used to swallow gum like crazy when I was small and i’ve been wanting to know the answer for a long time.People say that it stays in your body system, digestive system, i dont know for like seven years but it seemed exaggerated so i just want to know the truth. And yes i know everything is good in moderation
A: “Although chewing gum is designed to be chewed and not swallowed, it isn’t harmful if swallowed. An old wives’ tale suggests that swallowed gum sits in your stomach for seven years before it can be digested. But this isn’t true. If you swallow gum, it’s true that your body can’t digest it. But the gum doesn’t sit in your stomach. It progresses relatively intact through your digestive system and is excreted in your stool.”
