how can i isolate citric acid from other acids contained in fruit juices?
Q: i want to determine quantitatively how much citric acid is contained in a fruit juice sample. (CITRIC ACID ONLY) i already know that i can titrate the sample with NaOH but when i’m going to do this, i’m not sure if what i’ve measured is citric acid since fruit juices also contain other acids.
A: You might try adding calcium hydroxide to the solution to precipitate calcium citrate. You can then filter off the solid from the rest of your juice. Adding dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4) will reconstitute your citric acid, which you can then titrate with NaOH.However, care should be taken that you are not titrating sulfuric acid along with your citric acid. This is actually how industrial citric acid is produced.
