A: The best way to lose weight is to change your diet. Most athletes will agree that diet is a major part of being fit and healthy. Exercise is an important tool too, of course. As far as diet is concerned, I personally don’t recommend portion control and calorie counting – and I’m speaking from experience. You want to set up habits to last a lifetime and consciously depriving yourself of calories will do more harm. Eat a ton of fruits and vegetables. Start your day with a smoothie with greens, sprouts, fruits (like banana, berries, etc), ground flax seed and water. This will give your a tremendous boost – better than any caffeine. Eat several large salads every day. Your tastes WILL change, but it will take time. You’ll be full though, and that will help. Avoid dairy, meats, processed foods, sugar or have at least them in small quantities. Eat (raw)nuts, beans, (raw)seeds and some whole grains like quinoa or brown rice. Drink half your weight in ounces of water. I recommend working up to that one! The best thing I’ve ever done is to get off sugar. I love sugar and it is like a drug to me. It sets off a chain reaction that has your body craving more food than it really needs. Plus, most of the most calorie dense/nutrient deficient foods are highest in sugar (think muffins, cake, cookies, chocolate bars…etc). A good rule of thumb is to look at food labels and aim for 2 grams or less of sugar. Getting your sugar fix from fruit is by far the healthier choice – and even though it takes a little willpower watching those around me eat chocolate covered somethings I feel good knowing that I won’t have to deal with the after effects (grumpiness, cravings). I just buy myself a big bag of grapes or cherries and eat them all!! Find a treat like that for yourself and indulge in something. Frozen banana-blueberry ice-cream is amazing and easy to make! Just stick the frozen fruits in the food processor and that’s it. Spinkle with some walnuts and enjoy!A good book to get you started is “Eat to Live” by Dr. Joel Fuhrman. I don’t eat as much cooked food as he states, but I think he is quite brilliant and you’ll definitely lose weight following his advice.
