Flexible Sigmoidoscopy !?
Q: Well, I had one of these yesterday. NOT fun and totally unsuccessful. The reason for having this procedure, was because I have a slight swelling, (which I was CONVINCED was an ovary problem). I also had an Ovarian Scan in the afternoon, which the radiographer said showed nothing wrong there. I had an early hysterectomy, due to fibroids, they left my ovaries ‘in’. I have this dull ache like period pain for the last two or three months, sometimes feels really painful, makes me nauseaus and literally sick.I’ve had blood tests, came back normal. I’ve had 2 pelvic examinations, internal/external. I’ve had a smear test, no results back yet, even though it was about 4 weeks ago! Not for one moment had I considered that a small swelling about three inches from my hip-bone, going towards my belly button, could be something to do with my colon ???? or intestines.???Is this possible ? A Hernia was also categorically ruled out this week.I’ve had days of prodding and poking and other undignified stuff.Yesterday though, the sigmoidoscopy was AWFUL !I had the enema thing, that worked well, then once on the couch in the procedure/operating theatre, laying there with a tube up my bottom and watching my own ars* in vivid colour on a screen a foot away, I thought it would be a doddle. NOT so, the first bit was fine and it was really interesting, you don’t normally get to see such things…but when it came to the Doctor pushing the tube, or trying to, round a corner, I shrieked. The pain was so bad, I made him stop and take the thing OUT! He ridiculed my decision, saying that even little old ladies can cope with this procedure, better than I had. That he’d only completed a third of investigation site than he had intended. Well, I tried twice…I still couldn’t take the pain.Fact is, I’m no wimp. I’ve had lung surgery, and one other life saving Op, due to an accident and I swear, neither was as painful.Has anyone else out there had a similar experience with a sigmoidoscopy? Is there a better…and as accurate test I could have done perhaps? as obviously I need to get whatever is causing the problem.. sorted out.All I know is that I do not want another one of those! My Husband says we will do whatever we have to, to get me feeling well again but I guess we need to know other alternatives. Also, if it is something, that high up in my intestine, what could it be? Is it likely to be cancer, there is none in my family at all.HOPE someone out there may have some good advice on this. Thank you. and sorry it’s a long drawn out question, I’m just worried.
A: Go back and when you do ask for a different doctor, that one should NOT have been riduculing your pain!! I was always taught “Pain is what the patient says it is”. I have no experience of these procedures as they arnt in my field, so sorry I cannot advise really about this, however I would make a complaint about this doctor as that is not on at all!! Good luck and hope you get sorted out soon.
Really annoyed with my OBGYN!?
Q: This may be a bit long… so I apologize ahead of time! =) For years now I have been getting a really sharp pain in my lower abdomen on either side. Like if i get up in the morning and stretch with my arms above me head I get this undescribable pain in my left and right side. Its been there for years and just last year the pain started getting worse to the point where i could just be sitting there and it starts hurting. So last March i decided to ask my OBGYN about it when I went in for my annual. She said it sounds like cysts and she wanted to have them checked out because of the fact that I have such a high rate of cancer in my family and the fact that I had been bleeding for almost a month straight. She started scheduling pelvic Ultra sounds every two weeks so she could monitor their growth. She determined that my ovaries are of normal size but my right area has several small cysts and my left ovary has a mass of cysts and some that are very large, one of which was growing larger than my ovary. During this time I found out I was pregnant but was still continuing on witht he pelvic examines every two weeks to monitor the growth. When I went back in April they said the one that was very large had bursts and they had cleared me of any threat of cancer. My OBGYN said that I could have them removed but they will just grow back. Later in June I eneded up miscarrying and the pain from my ovaries kind of went away at least for a while. Now I am 15 weeks pregnant and it seems like from the minute I found out I was pregnant I have been having the pain again but this time its been worse then what its ever been. Sometimes I will just be laying in bed and switch over to my side and i get this unbearable sharp pain in my side. it feels as though someone has just stabbed me and is twisted it. It brings me to tears and takes my breath away. After a few minutes the pain tends to fade away but it is incredible pain like Ive never felt before. Now last Monday I stayed home from work because I was in so much pain. I called my OB to find out what I could do and they said nothing just drink lots of water and stay in bed. So when I went to my 3 month appt last week I asked for a note for work from missing Monday and he said “Well, I’ll give you a note this time, but it’s nothing to be missing work over” I was FURIOUS! I really love my dr and was shocked that he said that. He knows my history from before with the cysts so why would he say such a thing? Not only that but I called him that day and he told me to stay in bed! I just don’t get it. I really liked and respected my dr but after what he said its really made me think…. I dont care how many babies he has delivered or how long he has been in practice I dont think ANY man has a right to tell a woman what pain is bearable or not. The way he said it made me feel like I was just making an excuse to stay home from work. It really upset me. I’ve been trying to think over the past week if its just my hormones that have made me upset about it or did it really upset me… and I have came to the conclusion that he was out of line by saying that! Has anyone else ever gone through pregnancy with cystic ovaries? And how did you deal with the pain? Should I bring this up to my dr the next time I go in? I’m sorry this has been so long I just don’t know how to approach this and get over my anger towards my dr.
A: You poor thing! I’m sorry to say this but “GET ANOTHER DOCTOR!!” Don’t wait, please! Ovarian cysts are nothing to be shunned and I am so surprised to hear that your doctor has not been treating you for them or even looking for any other underlying symptoms. What you need to do is google “polycystic ovarian syndrome” and you will find a ton of helpful sites. You don’t list your age, but you have probably had this syndrome since you hit puberty and you need to be very careful with your health. Polycystic ovarian syndrome can have other underlying health issues such as weight problems, hypertension (high blood pressure), excessive hair growth (not in places you want it), problems getting pregnant, high cholestorol, and even diabetes. I have had this syndrome for 30yrs now and have only been diagnosed for 4yrs. I have gone through several doctors (mostly men) who have told me that a ruptured cyst should not have caused me such serious pain and suggested to me that it was “all in my head” and said I would benefit from seeing a psychiatrist and starting antidepressants. That’s when I nearly came over the desk at him! At the time I had insurance that required a referral from your primary care giver to see a specialist (and, yes, an OBGYN was considered a specialist), so I demanded that he refer me immediately or I would not leave his office. Turned out that the ruptured cyst had caused an acute pelvic infection which I had been walking around with for 6wks untreated. I had so much scar tissue I was told I could never get pregnant again. If I didn’t have grounds for a lawsuit I don’t know who would, but I was just glad to finally be out of pain. I’ve been through 5 pregnancys with ovarian cysts and have had no complications. I do not know if you can be treated for the cysts while pregnant or not since I was never treated until after the birth of my 5th child. I was put on Depo Provera injections which shrink the cysts and have had no pain since, but of course you can not do this while pregnant. No doctor should ever belittle a patient who comes to them in pain. I don’t care how far along in the pregnancy you are, this is not a man you want around to deliver your child, trust me on that one. He was definately way out of line and you should make him aware of this by leaving his services. Good luck, hope this helps you some.
TTC, Something wrong?
Q: Ive been ttc for awhile now and posted a question earlier but Im starting to believe Im just not able to, I had a lot of problems when I was younger such as constant yeast infections and other things followed , pelvic inflammatory disease, and then last Dec I found out I carried one of the HPV cervical cancer strains, thankfully had biopsy done and all was taken care of, as far as Ive been told, Honesty part of this, Ive only had 3 boyfriends and Now married to the 3rd but each one I didn’t use any type of birth control or condoms and I still have never been preg, and now my husband and I have been trying to about 11 months and still nothing, its got to be me huh? Ive been very afraid to actually say that( well I didn’t, I typed it) but Im looking for any kind of help right now, I have asked about fertility testing and there are about 6-7 test they have to do and insurance wont cover all or any. So if anyone has some good advise or maybe some comforting words it would be highly appreciated. Thank you. 🙂 Good Luck to everyone!
A: OK. Yeast infections and HPV virus won’t block pregnancy. The pelvic inflammatory disease might, but you really need to get in to see your gynecologist for a complete exam and blood work. I’m talking hormone levels, the works. Start taking your temperature every morning to see when you ovulate. Usually about two weeks after you start your period. That is the day you are most likely to get pregnant. (lots of girls think it is right after their period ends or some other time frame.) Good luck!
