Do Something Good in West Hernando County

The urge to volunteer may hit harder during holiday time, but there are many organizations out there that would love help during the normal times of year as well. Below is a highlight of some of the various ways you can help out to make the community better.

Hernando Beach Volunteer Fire Department are not just for those interested in going out and fighting fires like most people think. Due to that way of thinking, most of the volunteers out there are fire fighters. These volunteers do not really want to sit down and have to do stacks of paperwork after sweating out in our hot and humid environment putting out a fire for hours on end. They are almost always in need of people to help out in the office with their paperwork on a regular basis. The Hernando Beach station is the only one in the county that is 100% volunteers, from those who help out in the office all the way up to the Chiefs. Any help you can give them would be greatly appreciated. For those that are interested, go to the fire station located at 3451 Shoal Line Blvd, Hernando Beach on Tuesday nights after 6:30pm or on Saturday mornings.

Located on Highway 50 between Mariner Blvd and Deltona Blvd is Spring Hill Regional Hospital. They have a wide variety of opportunities for those interested in volunteering in a medical setting. They also have a junior volunteer program for teenagers from ages 13 to 18 with parental permission. Some of the various volunteer opportunities at SHR include patient care, new born baby assistant, customer service, marketing assistant and more. For more information on their volunteer opportunities call (352) 688-8200 extension 6305.

Like many counties, Hernando county has its own branch of Habitat for Humanity and is located at 19450 Cortez Blvd in Brooksville. According to Habitat, if you are interested in volunteering, then they have a place for you! Aside from the typical construction help that most people know Habitat for Humanity for, there are also opportunities for those interested in serving on committees for things such as Family Advocate, Fund Development, and Special Activities just to name a few. Their office is open Monday through Friday from 9am until 4pm. If possible, they ask for you to visit their website to view a video and then print out the volunteer application.
