Could I have had colon cancer for 3 years?
Q: Three years ago, when I was pregnant with my child, I started developing constipation and abdominal pain. I thought it was just pregnancy-related. It got worse, and worse, and worse, and worse. After about a year and a half (several months after I gave birth), I went to the hospital because I was in so much pain I could barely breathe. They did an X-ray and said I was extremely constipated, and they told me to follow-up with my doctor and look into getting a colonoscopy. They gave me a bunch of laxatives. I didn’t have a doctor and I was REALLY broke, so I kept trying to ignore it. Anyway, 6 months after that, it was getting a whole lot worse and I managed to come up with the money to see a doctor. He was really unhelpful and said I probably just had IBS. I think he only saw me for a few minutes. So, like three months ago– this is like 3 years after all this started– I finally managed to start seeing a doc regularly. My doctor also thinks I have IBS, but she says I’m still very constipated and that she’s “a little concerned” that there could be something else going on.I’m scared to death. I’m really low-risk for colon cancer– 23, female, vegetarian for 10 years… I had rectal bleeding a lot about 2 years ago but not anymore (it was from post-childbirth hemorrhoids)… But I still feel like there’s something wrong. I have horrible reflux, constipation, nausea, loss of appetite. I’m underweight and my stomach NEVER stops hurting. My mom’s a nurse, and she says there’s no way I could have had all these symptoms for 3 years and still be alive and walking around, if it was colon cancer. And my blood counts are norma; no anemia or anything.I don’t have money for a colonoscopy… I’ve arranged to get one for free, but that’s 8 months away. In the mean time, I’m scared to death that I’m going to die or that I’ve got a massive tumor in my bowels. Is there any way I could have had colon cancer all this time, and still be more-or-less okay? Can IBS really cause all these symptoms? The pain is unbearable and nothing helps…Serious answers only, please… And please don’t answer unless you have at least *some* idea of what you’re talking about.
A: I agree with your mother the nurse. Three years of symptoms – and only age 23 – plus no anemia.Your odds of being hit by lightning are far higher than your risk of having a massive colon adenocarcinoma. There are many non-malignant diseases which could cause this array of symptoms. The list is too long to go into here.
5-day early period, diarrhea, and nausea? Long but not stupid?
Q: My period came 5 days early, my cycle is 36 days long. I was expecting it June 8th but like I said, it got here earlier. My last period was May 4th. I had unprotected sex on May 19th for sure, and some day before that too but I’m not exactly sure what date. He didn’t finish inside me but it was unprotected nonetheless. The early period that I had was normal for the most part, in the beginning it was light pink, then it was normal. My flow is never extremely heavy, and it usually lasts 4 days. The only differences between this period and all my other ones, was that this one came with horrible cramps. I mean, EXTREME cramps. Granted, my pain tolerance is very weak because for most of my years since I started my period I never got abdominal cramps to begin with. The most that would hurt was my lower back and my legs. The cramps only lasted one day, though. After that, it was just like normal. Yesterday, a day after I thought my period had stopped completely, I got a feeling like if blood was coming out again, but it was only a light brown discharge. I have no idea what that was all about, but it was very short and only came out once. For the past week and a few days, I think, I’ve been (sorry for TMI) diarrhea. Nothing else accompanies it. Usually it’s in the mornings and at night. I don’t have any other symptoms that would point to a stomach flu. For the past few days, probably 5 or 4, I’ve been having nausea. I don’t get to vomiting or anything, but I feel an onset of something heavy coming, just like when you feel like you’re gonna throw up, and of course, the gross feeling that comes with it. That’s all that’s been happening. I don’t know if I’m sick or what’s going on…I don’t know if maybe I had an extremely early miscarriage (I only think this because of the horrible cramps I had during the second day of my period)…or if I’m sick, or what I believe is least likely, if I’m pregnant…I really doubt it because I heard implantation bleeding isn’t like a period. But who knows. There’s the “every woman is different” theory too, haha. Would taking a pregnancy test now be the right thing to do or what? I’m confused.Forgot to mention that when I got the brown discharge, my lower back and legs began to ache again but my period was supposedly over?
A: Thats what i tell women about myself when i meet them.. “long but not stupid”!! Its true!
