Severe Abdominal Pain-Female?
Q: I have been having Severe Left Abdominal Pain in the Ovary location for the past year on and off. However, this past January it became so severe that I passed out at work had to be taken to the hospital.Pain killers did not work after 3 different prescriptions. Two of the perscribed we Tramadol and HyrdocodoneThe Pelvic exam and CT scan showed no signs of anything. Not even Cysts, which I have a past history off. The scans showed that I have the normal amount of fluid in my Abdominal Cavity. It has not been as severe of pain or as constant in the past month, but about 3 times a week I will have that burst of pain in the area that forces me to stop what Im doing. I am so miserable with this pain. I can’t even perform daily tasks anymore without fearing that I will be dropped to my knees in such painDoes anyone have any idea what could be causing it?they have checked my pancreas with a blood test and it came out negative. My doctor hinted that I was being a hypocondriac, and so did the ER. I’ve become so upset by this. It’s a real issue, and the pain is real. I hate living like this.
A: I don’t know if this will help, but I used to have severe abdominal pain as well. I would move around though. Finally my gynecologist did a Laporoscopy where they go in through the belly button and vagina. They never saw anything on any of the tests (and there were many) but when they finally went in, they found lots of adhesions. They removed most of them, not all because some were too dangerous to remove. I have not had any abdominal pain since then. I suggest talking to your GYN Dr. I hope this has been helpful. It may not be your problem, but they still need to do more than x-rays and cat scans.
Pain with Diverticulosis, please help, whats going on?
Q: I was diagnosed with Diverticulosis a couple years ago, it was found on a CT scan with contrast by accident while i was being checked for a non-related issue i was having in 2008. I have had occasional pain with my condition but i have never had an actual Diverticulitis flare up, no fevers, no blood in stool, nothing. Just occasional lower left quadrant abdominal pain and crampiness. Well this weekend the pain got particularly bad, but still no fever or blood. I went to the ER and was given an abdominal CT w/out contrast as well as blood work and a thorough exam, the doc couldn’t find anything wrong with me at all. He sent me home with some pain meds and gave me a shot of Tramadol in the ER which fixed my pain a lot but didnt totally get rid of it. Now it’s been almost 48 hrs and i’m still having the abdominal pain, the ER doc told me i should follow up with my GP if the pain continues so i can get a colonoscopy and just make sure nothing else is going on. What could be causing my pain? I’m having regular bowel movements with out blood or any other issues. I just have these horrible LLQ pain with a burning/achy sensation in that area. What should i ask my GP about i have a followup with him on Thurs?..Should i go ahead and get the Colonoscopy exam or are there some other tests my GP should do? I make sure i eat lots of fiber and drink tons of water, i also eat yogurt eveyday to keep my digestive track regular but im still having pain. 🙁 what do i do?
A: Hi ☼▬krazegurl▬☼, Rhianna told me you were looking for my input. Your symptoms are consistent with mild diverticulitis, in someone with a past history of proven diverticulosis. ( I guessed you had to be medical BTW, you used the correct endings for the condition, many doctors don’t!) You don’t give your age, but you are perhaps aware that a huge percentage of the population of the Western World have a level of diverticulosis,as they, shall I say mature. Also your past ED might have contributed to the risk of its development. I have always quite liked the logic of the supposed pathophysiology of the condition, slow bowel transit allowing additional fermentation, raising the pressure in the large bowel and pushing out pouches. One can almost picture the process, nice, but unproven. However if you follow it to its logical conclusion, increasing fibre when you already have the condition could, at best, only reduce it increasing in severity, rather than do anything for pre-existing diverticulae.I think many people do get mild episodic flare ups without getting full blown, toxic attacks. Did the ER guy do a full blood work up? I might expect a raised white count, ESR/CRP even with a mild flare up. If this was not checked your GP should do them, even if they were any change in these results might also be helpful. I would stick to clear fluids only for the moment. I was pretty anti-antibiotics in general for the whole of my GP career, but I know some GPs who would automatically give them in even mild diverticulitis. I probably would not in the absence of fever or other definite signs of active inflammation. The most difficult question is if I were your GP what level would I pitch investigation? How often do you investigate someone that you know has diverticulosis when they get yet another flare up of probable mild diverticulitis? There is of course no correct answer. The safe choice, the American pay as go option, is every time of course, you miss less, but is it justified? Colonoscopies are uncomfortable. There is an argument for a watching brief, monitoring inflammatory markers and being aware of any warning signs that suggest the problem is more serious, or that there might be an alternative diagnosis.

A: It seems like your doctor seems to think that you have fibromyalgia and is treating you for that. If you aren’t satisfied with this diagnosis and treatment, see another doctor. You should probably start by seeing a neurologist for a second opinion.
