What is the minimum age a female chinchilla needs to be before she gets pregnant?
Q: I have owned my male chinchilla for about a year… Adopted a female yesterday. I don’t want her to be too young and get sick if she gets pregnant. She is around 6 months old right now. If she is too young to be pregnant, please tell me what to do to keep her from getting pregnant. They are separated at the moment. Thanks.PLEASE—no rude coments. 🙂
A: I answered your other question, regarding estrus cycles, and I’m going to link that information here as well, for people who might have the same question in the future. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AooFCe5G1wu1xaiqYbhPaD3sy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20100214152618AAZVd7o&show=7#profile-info-eaV0ip24aaAge is the bare minum of what to consider when putting chins into breeding, especially a female. There are people who will breed anything with a vagina and a penis, regardless of what is healthy for them or healthy for the breed as a whole. Most people wait until chins are a year old before putting a female into breeding, and they don’t do it until they have either been evaluated by a judge or an experienced breeder who has shown. They will put a black velvet into breeding earlier, because it can be harder to get them to “take” with the pregnancy. Even then, not before 8 months and only if they have had their pelvic opening evaluated to be sure that it is wide enough to push the kits out. Again, this is something that has to be done by an experienced breeder, vet, or judge. If you want to keep her from getting pregnant, keep her away from your male. No play time, no shared cage, no contact AT ALL. That is the only way to keep them from mating. It takes literally seconds for your female to become pregnant. The male penetrates and ejaculates that fast. By the time you reach to separate them, the deed is done. Getting a female pregnant too early can result in shortening her lifespan, birthing complications, and just an overall drain on her health. And, again, you need to consider all the other things that I posted about in your other question. This is in no way to tell you you CAN’T breed. It is to make you very aware of what is involved in breeding and raising kits. The amount of animals ending up on petfinder.com is staggering, and chinchillas are becoming one of their fastest growing adoptees. Please don’t add to that. Be serious about breeding and what you plan to do with it.I urge you to join http://www.chins-n-hedgies.com where you can get answers in a more give and take way than the way we are able to do it here. You can read more stories than what I just posted above, as well as find a good vet in your area should complications arise (C-sections can be anywhere from $500 to $1500.00). Good luck!
At what age should a female be ready to become a mother?
Q: I feel that I’m behind everyone my age. I see and hear most females in their early and mid 20s are getting married or having babies. Plus, many young celebrities in their 20s are pregnant nowadays. Although I’m almost 23, I feel 17 at heart. I’m currently a college student living off my parents (I hope I’ll get a job soon). I want to enjoy life, especially at a young age before settling down. I’m not pregnant or anything, but my mother and relatives have told me that I’m at the age where I should be getting married. They say being a mother at 30 is kind of late. But I don’t think I’ll be ready to be a mother until I’m in my 30s. So when should a female be ready to become a mother?
A: whenever she feels that she is spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and financially ready. Screw what everyone else says…you’re ready when you feel that your ready.Just cuz someone says “you’re 25 so you should become a mother” you shouldn’t listen to them. What if you still don’t have a job when you turn 25…so how r u gonna take care of that kid everyone else said you should have? They don’t have to take care of them, you do!
What age can female dogs breed?
Q: I have a female papillon that is only six months old, but has began a cycle. I don’t want her to have puppies this young, but I can’t supervise her all the time with the male dog(s). Can she get pregnant at this age, and if not, which age? Also, does anyone have any advice to go along with this? No, I am not into breeding dogs. But my mother has an intact Yorkie (2years) in which she is still considering using him as a stud/for breeding. I say ‘male(s)’ because friends and neighbors also have intact males.
A: To be completely safe you must wait until she is at least two years of age. Dogs usually come into heat around 6-8 months, but they are still immature and not able to handle puppies at this age. Heat cycles usually come about two times a year, about every 6 months. You female is able to get pregnant starting with her first heat cycle, I applaud you for not wanting her to have puppies at this age, but you must be very vigilant in keeping her away from the males. It takes about two years for the organs to mature and make them able to have puppies safely. With smaller breeds it is advised to wait even longer. Good luck!!!
