Who Are the Greatest Front Women in Rock Music?

Three things that make a rock star front woman are sex appeal, attitude and, of course, vocals. There have been many great female rock stars in the history of music including Joan Jett, Pat Benatar and Blondie.

Living in a Pop Material World:

Today’s musical climate is filled with pop stars like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Metal became a force with bands like Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold and Godsmack but each group is led by a male vocalist.

Just recently, Revolver magazine released its list of hottest chicks in hard rock. Bands with female leads have secretly pushed their way to the forefront. Without further ado, here are the top five greatest front women in rock music.

Amy Lee:

The enigmatic front woman of Evanescence can’t stay away if she tried. Amy Lee started her rock band when she was just a teenager and quickly took a hold of rock’s horns and propelled herself to the forefront of music with operatic songs like “Bring Me to Life” and “My Immortal.” The band is back after a five year hiatus and their self-titled album shot straight to number one on the Billboard chart. Lee’s gothic attire and mysterious personality makes her sexy. Her cool demeanor displays an attitude of “been there, done that” and her vocals sound as if she’s starring in an opera. It’s no wonder why Evanescence is the hottest band in the world right now.

Taylor Momsen:

Speaking of teenagers, the newly turned 18-year-old actress turned rock star fronts a band called The Pretty Reckless. They are currently on tour with Evanescence and although the two singers share a stage, there are many differences. Taylor Momsen is no stranger to sex appeal; the flirty diva has a history of flashing her breasts to audiences across the world. Some may think this is trashy but the way in which the former “Gossip Girl” star handles herself, it seems like she knows what she’s doing. Her stage presence works similar to an exotic dancer and her wardrobe complements her behavior. But that’s not what makes The Pretty Reckless successful. Momsen’s voice is crisp and raspy, loud and her range ranks up there with any front woman.

Nina Diaz:

The all-girl group Girl in a Coma is led by the multi-talented Nina Diaz. She may not have the clout or name recognition yet, but one day people will know who she is. The band’s brand of punk and rockabilly is nothing like you’ve ever heard. That alone sets Diaz apart from other rock stars. What’s amazing about the singer is she’s the only guitarist in the band. She’s shy on stage, cool as can be and her voice speaks for itself. If you add in her ability to write remarkable songs she could one day be one of the best front women ever.

Kelly Ogden:

The Dollyrots are synonymous with fun. A punk rock outfit led by the bubbly Kelly Ogden, the band has been featured on the soundtrack to “Easy A” and their fan base is a dedicated cult. Like Diaz, Ogden pulls double duty singing and playing bass guitar. She’s sexy in the innocent, fun girl way and her attitude of always having fun is contagious. Anyone who is looking for a band they can sing along to should look to The Dollyrots. Ogden doesn’t have quite the range as Lee or Diaz but that’s OK; her band’s music is conducive to her style of singing.

Lzzy Hale:

Halestorm is fairly new to the business but has quickly garnered a reputation of being one of the greatest rock bands around. They’ve opened for groups like Avenged Sevenfold and Disturbed and have also been a headlining act. Lzzy Hale’s voice is probably the best in the business. She’s like the female version of Chris Cornell. If you need a note hit, Hale is your girl. The fact that she wails on rhythm guitar lends itself to her sex appeal. On stage the front woman takes control of the audience to a point fans think she’s been around for decades.
