Volunteer Opportunities: Atlanta Area

Volunteering has become the backbone of non-profit organizations and something that which many of these organizations depend on to stay afloat. Here are a few local organizations that are in constant need of volunteers:

The Atlanta Community Food Bank
The mission of the Atlanta Community Food Bank (ACFB) is to fight hunger by educating, empowering and engaging our community. They have been around since 1979 and distributes over two million pounds of food and donated personal care and household items every month. These donations go to individuals and over 700 non-profits in the Metro Atlanta and North Georgia communities. The ACFB has volunteer opportunities for both individuals and large groups from ages 8 and up. I have volunteered at the ACFB on as both an individual and as part of a group. On both occasions I was in the main warehouse to sort food and pack boxes, however there are several different opportunities to help.

Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless
The mission statement of Hosea Feed and Hungry and Homeless is to rescue, restore and re-stabilize at-risk and homeless individuals and families so they can thrive and become self-sufficient. They have a unique way of accepting volunteers, you must log onto their website and fill out a form with your preferred areas of volunteerism and as they opportunities become available, they are emailed to you in a timely manner. The chance to volunteer is a coveted thing in the Atlanta volunteer community so the chance to do so does not come around every day.

I have also volunteered here as Director of a youth program for the Atlanta Urban League. Our day of service with the teen group consisted of sorting donated food and clothing, cleaning the facility, moving furniture and helping the older staff members with day to day tasks. Volunteering at Hosea Feed and Hungry and Homeless proved to be a great experience for teens whom sometimes cannot see the world outside their own existence.

Hands on Atlanta
The mission statement of Hands On Atlanta is to build community and meet critical needs through volunteer service and civic engagement. Hands on Atlanta helps both individuals and groups improve the community all throughout the Metro Atlanta area by providing volunteers at over 400 non-profits and schools. The volunteers tutor, mentor, help the environment and help families to get out of poverty through their daily activities.
