Turn One Crocheted Hat Pattern into More Than a Dozen Different Looks

I love this pattern. Each hat I make is unique because I change either the yarn, work two strands of yarn together, or change color pattern of the hat. The pattern works for adults or kids. Make the hat in less than two hours time; in most cases, it will cost less than five dollars to create. If you are a beginner who can work in single crochet, you can work in the round to make this hat.

Free Crochet Pattern

Change the type of yarn or the size of the crochet hoot to vary the look and size of this hat. Start with an H, I, or J hook. Each combination of yarn and hook size will create different results. On average, you want the crown to be six inches; make it smaller or larger by eliminating increase round or working in Ch 3, join with a sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 6 sc in center of ring. Do not join.

1. 2 sc in each sc (12 sc)
2. 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat the pattern for a total of 18 stitches
3. 1 sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat the pattern around for a total of 24 stitches
4. 1 sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 30 stitches.
5. 1 sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 36 stitches.
6. 1 sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 42 stitches.
7. 1 sc in next 6 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 48 stitches.
8. 1 sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 54 stitches.
9. 1 sc in next 8 sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat for 60 stitches. (Optional, to make the hat’s crown larger.)
10. Continue around until the hat is as long as desired. You can make a brim by working the hat longer and rolling or folding up the brim.

Yarn and Design Options for a Crocheted Hat

1. Make the hat in a solid color.
2. Use a variegated or multi-colored yarn throughout the entire hat.
3. Make the hat in a solid color and the brim with a multi-colored yarn.
4. Make the hat in a multi-colored yarn and the brim in a solid color.
5. Make the hat with a smooth, medium-weight yarn and the brim with an eyelash or other novelty yarn.
6. Create the entire hat using a novelty, or textured, yarn.
7. Work the hat in narrow stripes, alternating between two or three colors. To avoid a staggered spiral pattern, use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of a row. Use a slip stitch to mark the end of the row and chain one to start the new row.
8. Hold a medium-weight yarn together with a superfine, fine, or ribbon yarn and work together throughout the hat. You won’t change the size of the hat; however, you will add an interesting dimension to the yarn.
9. Use a chunky yarn and a larger crochet hook. Watch the gauge, you want stitch the increases for the crown of the hat so it is approximately six-inches. Any larger and you risk an over-large hat.
10. Make a stovepipe, Cat in the Hat-like hat by holding two strands of medium-weight yarn together for strength. Work the crown to 42 or 56 stitches. Then, work the hat longer than usual. When you get to the point where you’ll want the brim, increase in multiples of six for the next row or two. Add another two non-increase rows to complete the brim.
11. Work the hat so it just covers the tips of the ears. Slip stitch to finish the row. Chain 3 and then double-crochet around the hat. Slip stitch to finish the row. Chain 1 and then add a row of single crochet.
12. Work the hat so it comes to mid-ear. Work a shell pattern or another trim around the hat.
13. To suggestion 12 add a large crocheted flower or three small crocheted flowers in a cluster.
14. Find scraps of yarn that look good together. Use one, and then add the next when that runs out. Keep adding different yarns until you complete the hat.
