Travel to London Without Breaking the Bank

The conversion rate from American dollars to British pounds can be intimidating, but after purchasing airfare, London can be a cheap vacation away from home. If you travel at the correct times, even airfare can be highly discounted. With proper planning, your vacation to London can cost hundreds of dollars less than you may have expected.

Airfare

Book your tickets to London during the winter months. When you fly during the off season, January through May, and October through November, you will save hundreds of dollars on airfare. Booking your ticket on a Wednesday through Wednesday will also give you the lowest rate because this is the cheapest day to travel. Keep in mind during this time, attractions are not open as long as they would during the summer and the weather can be cold.

Attractions

Many of London’s museums are free thanks to funding from the city’s lottery fund. Tate Modern, The British Museum and national galleries are just a few museums that are famous and free. Exhibits may cost extra, and donations are welcome at the door. If you want to catch a show in London’s famous West End, purchase tickets at the discount booths in Leicester Square. When you are eating in London, keep in mind that it is often cheaper to “take away” than eat in-house. You can even save money when you go out clubbing by visiting bars, pubs and nightclubs that do not have a cover. There are a number of these across the city even in Leicester Square and Covent Gardens.

Accommodations

During off-season you will also find the cheapest hotel rates because hotels cannot fill up their rooms. Use an online travel search engine to find hotel specials as well. If you are traveling by yourself or with others, consider staying at one of London’s many youth hostels. These room are rented by the bed or by private room.
