Top 5 Super Nintendo Games

The Super Nintendo, or SNES for short, is one of the best video game systems ever made. Released in 1991, it went on to sell nearly 50 million units. It gave us some of the most memorable video games of all-time. It was the first system to give us in depth graphics and story lines. It was the system that expanded the popularity of the role playing game genre. It also gave us, arguably, the greatest game ever released for any system (see #1 below). Here are the five best SNES games of all-time.

1) Super Metroid. This is the greatest game ever made, on any system. Everything about this game is sheer perfection. It featured a great story, phenomenal graphics, a stunning soundtrack/music, and playability beyond anything offered before or since. It also has something that makes a good game a great game – replayability. The journey of Samus is one that every player will treasure always.

2) Chrono Trigger. This game is the best RPG (role playing game) ever. It constantly ranks at either number one or two in online polls of the genre (along with the PS1 game Final Fantasy VII). Chrono Trigger was groundbreaking in the RPG field. The game was the first to offer deep character development. This allowed people to become emotionally attached to the game and its characters. If you have never tried a role playing game, Chrono Trigger is a great first choice.

3) Super Mario World. Continuing in the tradition of the NES’ legendary trilogy of Super Mario Bros. games, Super Mario World was a platform side-scroller that still holds up to this day. It is as fun to play as any of the epic Mario games. It was similar to the NES Mario games but expanded upon in length and improved graphics that the SNES afforded. If you grew up playing the SNES, you most certainly have great memories of this game.

4) NBA Jam. The first truly great basketball video game is still the most fun basketball game made to this very day. It was also one of the first games to allow codes to be entered to alter game play. Remember the codes that allowed you to do full court dunks, play as Bill Clinton, or constantly run super fast? You know you do. Plus, who could forget the Dick Vitale voice saying “boom-shack-a-lack-a!”, in the fourth quarter when you shattered the rim? This game beats all current basketball games because of two reasons – it is fun and it is simple to play. Best basketball game ever. Period.

5) Donkey Kong Country. This game was the furry ape’s first adventure game. Before DKC he was resigned to tossing barrels at Mario. And he was the villain. In Donkey Kong Country he is the hero. Similar in play to Super Mario World, it was a multi-player game (could be played in single player mode) that was a side-scrolling adventure. Who can ever forget the great music either? So much fun. Time to relive your youth and bust out the SNES. It never gets old.
