Top 3 Contemporary Dance Shoes

As a longtime lyrical and contemporary dancer, I’ve found that the best way to dance is in my bare feet. Not only does barefoot dancing allow me to really feel the floor, it has a grounded feel that appeals to me. Sometimes, I will wear a sock when I dance so that I can turn. I have found that I can hit my turns a lot better in a simple tube sock than I can in any fancy dance shoe.

While I definitely prefer dancing barefoot or in one sock to using dance shoes, there are some situations in which shoes are unavoidable. Certain dance classes require students to wear shoes. The same goes for many dance competitions. If you have to wear contemporary dance shoes, it is best to find a pair that will give you the same free feeling you get in barefoot dancing, while making it easy to turn on a variety of surfaces and looking good with your dance costume. Listed here are three contemporary dance shoes for those who would rather wear no shoes at all.

Capezio Foot Undeez

Dubbed as “underwear for your feet,” Capezio Foot Undeez are nearly invisible, making them great for the barefoot dancing look. Capezio Foot Undeez are thin enough to wear inside other dance shoes if you need a little protection, but sturdy enough to use alone. The upper part of Foot Undeez shoes are made of mesh, making them an excellent option for contemporary dancers prone to sweaty feet. They come in several colors so that you can match a pair of Foot Undeez to just about any dance costume.

Capezio Pirouette

Another great contemporary dance shoe in the Capezio line, the Capezio Pirouette brings a traditional ballet feel to the world of contemporary dance. This contemporary dance shoe looks a little like a ballet shoe cut in half and attached around the ankle with two elastic bands. The Capezio Pirouette is made from a leather and lycra mix, with a sole constructed from suede. It is by far the best contemporary dance shoe to wear for competitions that ban open-toed dance shoes.

Dance Paws

Similar in contruction and feel to the popular Foot Undeez, Dance Paws are designed with a form-fitting construction that will prevent feet from slipping around. Dance Paws provide excellent protection against blisters, skin tears and burns from friction. What’s more, Dance Paws still manage to remain refreshingly unobtrusive in appearance. As such, they are a favorite for anyone in love with barefoot dancing.
