All About Steve Jobs – American Icon

Steve Jobs succumbed to pancreatic cancer on October 6, 2011, leaving behind a legacy which includes the Apple II, Macintosh, iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. He revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computers and digital publishing. History will place him next to Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. More than anyone else of his time, he made products that were completely innovative. He built what has become the world’s most valuable company, passing Exxon-Mobil in 2011. Steve’s quest for perfection led him to his compulsion for Apple to have total control of every product it made. He created Apple software so that it could not run on a competitor’s hardware, a policy that Microsoft did not follow. Apple’s integrated approach led to products marked by delightful user experiences.

Steve Jobs was a ferocious employer, not necessarily a kind or good one. He never finished college, was an adopted child, and was fortunate to run into Steve Wozniak, a self-taught engineer with rare talents. Together they formed Apple in 1976. Wozniak’s engineering genius led to the Apple II in 1977, with Steve Jobs’ keen instincts for design. Wozniak’s injuries from a private plane crash took him away from his connection with Apple; thereafter the company was run totally by Steve Jobs. That is, until Apple’s Board of Directors stripped him of his power in 1985, forcing Jobs to retire. He went on to form a company called NeXt which made computer-generated cartoons under the name of Pixar. In 1995, Disney released Pixar’s first feature film, Toy Story. In 2006, Steve Jobs sold Pixar to Disney for $7.4 billion.

Steve Jobs eventually returned to Apple as its CEO in the year 2000. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, Apple became a consumer electronics company when it decided to get into the MP3 player business. The company doesn’t claim to have invented the iPod; it received most of the technology in acquisitions. Apple followed it up with the iPhone and the iPad, selling roughly 210,000 iPhones a day. More than any other Silicon Valley company, Apple keeps its secrets secret until it is ready to talk about them.

Steve Jobs married Laurene Powell in 1991; they are the parents of a son and two daughters. Walter Isaacson, a former managing editor of Time has written a biography of Steve Jobs with Jobs’ cooperation. The book, entitled Steve Jobs will be published on October 24, 2011.
