The Relationship Between Life and Golf: Introduction

It is often talked about how there are many life lessons that can be learned through the game of golf. There is so much that can be learned from the game, and understanding the relationship between life and golf can help individuals grow and reach their goals. Whether they want to improve their life or just their golf game, they can improve on both by just improving their golf game. It is the perfect game to learn at any age. However, there are benefits to learning at a young age. Learning about golf etiquette and following the rules of golf, can help children learn how to behave not only on the course but off the course as well. Many adults who take up the game later in life often tend to have of a problem with bad behavior on the golf course. It could be a case of the chicken or the egg; does having a good attitude breed a better golfer or does golf teach us to have a better attitude? It could very well be both, but find the later holds true more often than not. Understanding how life and golf can correlate to each other can help people succeed in many aspects of their daily life.

How someone plays golf is a huge indicator of how they live their life. Golfers that throw clubs, get overly upset, cheat, and constantly complain about course conditions are the same people that we would rather not be around in our daily life. Just like on the golf course these individuals lie, get angry easily, and constantly complain throughout the day. There is no doubt that how someone plays golf is indicative of how they live their life. It is easier to see what we need to do differently on the golf course then it is in our life. For example, think of something you struggle with in your daily life, let’s assume its patience. There is a strong chance that when a group in front of you is playing slow, you will struggle with being patient. By knowing that you struggle with patience, if you make an effort to exercise more patience on the course, you will see an improvement when you’re off the course. So golf is a great way to highlight weakness so they can be improved on in daily life.

Most of us secretly want to be liked by others, right? Do you want to play golf with someone who cheats, complains, and is easily angered after every bad shot? Sure, every once in a while a thrown club can be amusing, but after a while it just becomes extremely old and annoying. Most people would rather play golf with someone who can laugh at them self when they hit a bad shot and not take them self so seriously (chances are if they are hitting that many bad shots they have no reason to have such high expectations in the first place). On top of that, we play golf because it is enjoyable, and is a chance to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Nobody wants to be stuck in a round of golf with someone for five hours who only wants to complain about how bumpy the greens are, or how there is too much or too little sand in the bunkers. If we don’t want to play with these types of people, make sure you aren’t one of them.

Not only can becoming a better playing partner on the golf course earn people more friends, but becoming a better golfer can teach us how to reach our goals off the course. We all want to become successful, but often individuals don’t know where to start. They may be too scared to work toward their goals for fear of failing, or may say “it would be awesome to be successful if it happens but not really willing to work hard for it”. But anyone who is successful knows it doesn’t come by accident, it takes planning and a vision of before it can be accomplished. Professional golfers go through this process before each shot. They don’t hit a shot without visioning what they want the ball to do. They determine where they want the ball to end up, and then how they want it to get there. Once they step up to the ball they stick to the plan by swinging the way they rehearsed it. Those who say they hope to become successful without having a plan, is the same as a golfer walking onto a par 3 without seeing the green and randomly picking a club. The golfer doesn’t know the direction of the hole or how far it is, and even if they guessed right, the chances of them grabbing the right club are only 1 in 14. This golfer would be lucky to hit the green once out of 100 times. Those are about the same odds of someone becoming successful without a plan.

Golf can be one of the most enjoyable activities; however, when not playing well and not knowing how to manage it, it can be one of the most frustrating activities. Much like life, there are many ups and downs, and if one doesn’t know how to handle the bumps in the road that life can offer, it too can be extremely frustrating and even scary. As all great golfers know, they aren’t always going to play their best and will have just as many bad breaks as they will good ones. It is through the game of golf that we can learn the skills that will help us through the good and bad times that life can throw at us. Improving on these skills can lead to a more fulfilling and enjoyable life on and off the course.
