The Original Dog Beach in San Diego, California

Are you’re looking for a great dog beach in San Diego, California? Then why not bring your dog and his buddies to the original Ocean Beach, Dog Beach located just off Interstate 8 at Sunset Cliffs. It’s a mile long beach, combined with picturesque rock jetties. You’ll find Dog Beach at the northern-most end of Ocean Beach…and it is available 24/7!

We love taking our dogs to this enjoyable location. They always appreciate running along the shoreline and splashing in the waves. The beach is not large, but there is plenty of sandy coastline on which to play. Often, on the weekends, we’ll find dozens of dogs and their owners appreciating the warm, sunny San Diego seashore.

At the southern end of the beach there is a municipal pier. Fishing from the pier is allowed, although regulations for keeping fish apply. You’ll also find a volley ball net for your human friends, and there are restrooms, tables, and lifeguards during the summer months.

What we enjoy most about Dog Beach is that the focus is on our dogs! We always take along a ball and a Frisbee. Dog Beach is a great place to visit and a fantastic place to meet new friends, both two and four legged! It’s one of our favorite forms of recreation year round. We pack a chair, a picnic, and then we sit back, relax and enjoy! At some point we always go for a quiet walk along the paved path.

Dog Beach welcomes well behaved dogs who are up to date with their shots. Because dogs are allowed to run, Dog Beach recommends a muzzle for any dog that may have difficulty with his friends! A leash is required while walking dogs to and from the parking lot. (Note: The usual dog laws apply and are firmly enforced. Please be sure to leave the beach clean when you leave!)

Dog Beach is easy to get to. It’s free of charge and there isn’t any entrance or parking fee. Travel west on I-8 until you reach the end, then take a left turn at Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Stay to the right on Sunset Cliffs Blvd, then turn to the right onto Point Loma. The first right hand turn is the entrance (at the end of Voltaire Street).

It’s important to note that because Dog beach is designated as a canine beach, you always need to be careful where you step! The beach is also occasionally known for its red tides and rip-tides, so it is not the safest beach for swimmers.

It is, however, a golden sanctuary for dogs of all types and their owners. Plan to come out and visit the original Ocean Beach, Dog Beach soon. Bring along your dog’s favorite toys and be prepared to enjoy a day of play, fresh ocean air, and relaxation!
