The Lady in White

Years ago, I was all alone in my parents’ house, the house where I lived most of my life. Since it sometimes scared me when I was all alone in the house, I decided to sit at my mother’s computer in the family room (the newer addition to the house) and work on an assignment for grad school. I was on the computer for a couple of hours, and suddenly had the urge to look away from the screen.

I glanced to my left, and standing in the hallway, in front of my bedroom (in the old part of the house), was a pale young woman. She had dark brown/black hair and brown eyes, and was wearing a white nightgown with a white bonnet. The woman appeared to be in her early twenties, and was about to enter my bedroom. However, when I looked her way, she turned to look back at me with very sad eyes. It seemed like she was not expecting me to be there or look her way.

I was not as scared as I thought I would be, at that moment. However, when it occurred to me that I might be looking at an apparition, I thought that either my eyes were playing tricks on me or I had gone crazy. I decided to look away from the woman down the hall, and then look back, telling myself that she would be gone when I looked that way again. Sure enough, she was gone.

However, after my encounter with the sad lady down the hallway, I became fascinated with who she might have been in her living years. Although I still do not know who the mystery lady in white might be, I know that my parents’ house was originally built in 1949. Sometimes I think that she might have been the first resident of this house and has never left.
