The Honey Badger: There’s an App for That!

One of last year’s smash hits on You Tube was the hysterically funny video of the Honey Badger, narrated by a guy who goes by the name of Randall. The video is a hilarious parody of a 2007 National Geographic film that depicts one of the nastiest animals on the planet. Since the release of Randall’s version nearly a year ago, the video has been viewed over 31 million times and has provided a source of inspiration for sports, particularly the San Francisco 49ers football team and more recently, the Louisiana State University football team.

Not surprisingly the Honey Badger phenomena is now an app game that is available for the iPhone, the iPod Touch and the iPad. So out of curiosity, I went ahead and made the $1.99 purchase to sample it out and while I do not profess to be a gamer in any level, I did find that it was easy to understand and fairly amusing. The first image you seen as the game loads are two animated mice who meet and appear to fall in love. Suddenly the honey badger appears out of nowhere and goggles them both up and then gives you, the viewer, a thumbs up. The controls will appear on both sides of your screen and they enable the honey badger to move in different directions and to eat the various critters that appear in the game, including mice, birds, bees, scorpions and yes, there are cobras too but certainly not in the same manner you will see in the graphic National Geographic video. Oh and you’ll also receive plenty of hilarious comments from Randall himself if you enable the badger to eat a critter, and chastises you for running into obstacles, among other insults. I must warn you that the video game is uncensored although during my brief attempts at going through the first level, I wasn’t exposed to any profanity or vulgarity but judging by the comments in the reviews, they’re there. The game appears to be getting rave reviews on iTunes but some reviewers have complained that some of the highly rated reviews are from the developers of the video game but I can’t substantiate that and like the honey badger, don’t care.

Oh but wait, there’s much more! There is even the official app of the outrageous narrator Randall. Now this is a free app on iTunes and it features some other videos that Randall has made including the Gross and Disgusting American bullfrog, the Nasty and Disgusting World of Vampire Bats, The Fantastic Zebras and many more. It also offers official Honey Badger Don’t Care merchandise and information on future appearances where you can actually meet Randall in person! The next Bay Area appearance for Randall is at the Stanford University Bookstore in Palo Alto on January 26th.

So if you are a fan of the Honey Badger, you might be inclined to check out the video game or the official free app. I thought the original Honey Badger Don’t Care video was THE funniest video I had the pleasure of seeing all year and it looks like Randall is taking full advantage of this ever popular internet sensation.
