Texas A&M Will Surprise the SEC

All you can find lately is publication after publication stating that Texas A&M will fall flat on its face if it joins the Southeastern Conference. These assumptions are based on little research and little knowledge about what Texas A&M University has to offer. It seems as though 10 years of football has made most think that Texas A&M is a school that can be written off with no consideration. This is unfair.

While Texas A&M hasn’t exactly succeeded on the football field since the departure of RC Slocum, the athletic department has taken major leaps forward even when football was struggling. The arrival of Bill Byrne as athletic director has helped Texas A&M see a revitalization of all programs across the board. Facilities all over campus are being built or renovated to accommodate the blue chip student athletes you need to succeed. Sports teams including the women’s basketball team are winning championships at a level never seen before at Texas A&M. The men’s basketball team has experienced great success and multiple consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. The football team under the direction of Mike Sherman is poised to make a serious run on the national stage. The all important money making athletics facility on campus (Kyle Field) is rumored to be renovated in the near future. The completion of that will only create more revenue streams for the athletics department and a transition to the SEC will only excite more boosters into more donations. Life is getting better for Aggie Athletics every day.

It’s easy to look at a mediocre football record and just decide to cast Texas A&M off as over matched in the SEC. A&M has one of the biggest endowments of any university in the country. A&M has one of the biggest alumni bases in the country. A&M has one of the biggest campus enrollments in the nation. A&M has access to multiple major television markets. A&M has one of the most tradition rich histories in the nation. Success is demanded at A&M.

This isn’t a piece written to present sources for exact numbers. All of the assertions made are available to be discovered. Just remember, don’t underestimate a university that has the resources that rival those at the University of Florida. That’s a school that has done pretty well for itself in the SEC.
