Tallahassle Demo EP Review

While most of my articles focus on the local acts here in St. Louis, a band out of Jonesboro, Arkansas has more than caught my attention. First formed as a two piece in 2005-2006, they took a break from music for several years. Then in 2010, they regrouped and added 3 new members and started writing music again. Recently, they finished their first self-titled demo EP. With Tallahassle limited in it’s publicity, they have been constricted to shows mostly in Jonesboro, Memphis, Little Rock and Cape Girardeau.

Listening to the band on a whim, i checked out their purevolume page, which currently has three songs on it. From start to finish of each one, the listener feels like they’ve been put on a rollercoaster through every circle of hell that’s been described by Dante. The music carries with it a spookily melodic background that transitions to what can only be described as apocalyptic chaos, all the while sustaining the same theme throughout each song.

For example, in the song To The Wolves, the howls of the animals are heard almost throughout the entire track. Towards the end of it, the howls are drowned out by a soundbite by none other than Charles Manson: “If I wanted to kill somebody I’d take this book and beat you to death with it and I wouldn’t feel a thing. It’d be just like walking to the drug store.”

Their recordings aren’t the only things that impress. Seeing them play in Cape Girardeau, their live show not only showed passion but energized a crowd that had hardly even heard of the group, gaining a new following in one night.

For any music lover of Converge, Gaza, Isis, and Rise & Fall, Tallahassle is sure to blow your mind, one way or the other. I highly recommend this band and hope to see more venues in both St. Louis and other surrounding areas to recognize them as well.
