Sleep is a very important of our lives. It affects us in many ways. Learning how to get to sleep faster will benefit you in many ways such as helping you to feel better and happier, helping you to make more friends, making you less irritable, and many other things. Sleeping is something everyone does, and takes up aroundone third of the average person’s life. Think about it, if you spend that much of your life sleep (around 219,00 hours) shouldn’t you get the most out of it? The best thing to do is follow these simple tips that will tell you how to get to sleep faster.

1. Do things that help you relax

Yes, this an extremely obvious thing to do. Being more relaxed is going to help you get to sleep faster. But how can you do this? There are a variety of ways to do this, but every person is different. The simplest way you can get to sleep faster is by controlling your breathing. The easiest way to do this is by taking deep, spaced- out breaths. Inhale for 2-3 seconds, sucking in as much air as you can, then slowly exhale. Doing this slows your heart rate and lets your body know that it is time to relax. Another thing to do before you go to sleep is to stretch. This loosens up any tight muscles in your body and helps to relax them as well. You will seem to feel lighter and looser, making it easier to fall asleep. Another great tip to help you go to sleep faster is taking a warm shower right before bed. After the shower your body temperature will decline rapidly, making you feel cold and wanting to cuddle up in bed. Taking a shower also gives you a nice, clean feeling that gets rid of any sweat or dirt from the day that could cause uncomfortableness.

2. Read a book

Reading a book before you go to sleep can make you feel drowzy and sleepy, especially if the book is boring. Many people fall asleep reading textbooks or informational articles, which is a very effective idea. You can learn something new while at the same time preparing yourself for sleep. What I have found is that you will probably read until your eyes just can’t stay open any longer, and then they will shut and you will fall asleep in seconds. However, there are some genres that I would avoid around bedtime. Don’t read action stories, adventure stories, or stories with a lot of suspense before bedtime as this will just keep you up longer.

3. Turn off that TV!

Watching some TV before bed is okay, but try not to watch too much. This also includes phones, computers, and pretty much anything else with a screen. These keep you up longer and can trick your body into thinking you are less tired than you really are. Try to turn off any of these devices within 30 minutes of you going to sleep. Doing so will make it much easier to get to sleep, as well as help you get more out of your sleep at night.

4. Go to bed/ wake up at a constant time

Many people go to bed early on weeknights, and then go to bed late on the weekends. You should go to bed at a constant time every night, as well as wake up at the same time each morning. Doing this will not just help you get to sleep faster, it will also help you sleep better too. If you get in a good habit of going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, you will eventually be able to wake up without an alarm clock (assuming you get enough sleep each night) Waking up on your own feels extremely good, and you will feel extremely well- rested.

5. Don’t take naps!

I know that couch is tempting, but taking a nap in the afternoon will make it much harder to get to sleep that night. If you start feeling sleepy during the day, drink some water and go for a walk or do some jumping jacks. This will help wake you up as well as make you more alert and focus on whatever you are doing.
