Sex and the City Prequel ‘The Carrie Diaries’ Confirmed

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the CW recently confirmed that it is moving forward with the Sex and the City prequel series The Carrie Diaries and Summer in the City: A Carrie Diaries Novel, both written by Sex and the City author Candice Bushnell. The Carrie Diaries follows beloved main character Carrie Bradshaw as she navigates through her senior year of high school in a small New England town in the early 1980s.

In Summer and the City, the story continues to follow the small-town girl into her first adventures in New York City as an aspiring writer. The story is told from Carrie’s perspective as she falls in love and meets new friends Samantha Jones and Miranda Hobbes. The prequel explores how Carrie transitions from a small-town girl to the successful writer and fashion icon she eventually becomes in Sex and the City.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Gossip Girl producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will be leading the much-anticipated project. Sex and the City co-producer Amy Harris will also be involved to help adapt the book into a television series. However, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed Sex and the City producer Michael Patrick King will not be part of the project and has no desire to see the franchise move in that direction.

“My Carrie Bradshaw started at 33, and I took her to 43. I didn’t even want to know who Carrie Bradshaw’s parents were because I thought she only existed in Manhattan,” King is quoted as saying during a Television Critics Association press tour. “So for me, the idea of going backwards and making her less evolved … is something that I don’t imagine doing.”

Sex and the City stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Kristen Davis have also both openly opposed the idea of a prequel. Davis told E! Online that she is against the idea “because we’re us and we’ve discussed our history in the show already so for all of our fervent fans who listen to what we say, why would we rewrite that?”

Parker echoed Davis’ sentiments to the Los Angeles Times.

“I don’t think we can pretend to go back,” she said. “It’s creating two histories. It’s like, ‘Oh I didn’t know that about Carrie Bradshaw.’”

However, both stars have expressed interest in a Sex and the City 3 movie.

Although the prequel has now been confirmed, there has not been an official announcement revealing the actors and actresses who will be starring in the series.
