Selling Handmade Jewelry in a Small Town

You’ve started making jewelry at home and now you’re ready to start selling it. The only problem is there are thousands of others selling handmade jewelry just like you all over the Internet. So, how can you sell your handmade jewelry to make some extra money without having to compete with all the others? Below are several different ideas to try out when you live in a small town and are selling handmade jewelry from home.

Gas Stations

The idea of selling at gas stations sounds crazy, right? Well, it actually depends on the type of gas station and its location. Some gas stations only sell gas, making this a bad choice, but sit back and think about the gas stations in your town. Do some of them sell gifts already (balloons, candles, crafts, etc.)? Do they have a small bakery or grill inside? Do you know the owners personally? Who shops inside? Is it more men, women or a balance of both?

When it comes time for Christmas, a birthday, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, you may find that more men will purchase your handmade jewelry than women. Often, men would rather pick something up for their wife or girlfriend at a place they visit frequently like a gas station. Having your handmade jewelry available to them will more than likely result in great sales.

Beauty Shops

Even in small towns, you’ll probably find several beauty shops. These are great places to think about selling hair jewelry and other accessories. Females love to have something to look at while waiting for their appointment time or even while waiting for their color to be washed out.

Certain times of year, you will be able to sell prom and homecoming jewelry and hair accessories, and let’s not forget Christmas time being a big selling opportunity. Do a little research on YouTube to find out what the younger girls are wearing this year, and make your jewelry accordingly.

Dress Shops

While bridal shops are a great place to sell bridal jewelry, check with local dress shops for even more opportunities. When women shop, they want to find a total outfit from top to bottom. Visit the store before making some sample jewelry to show the owner to find colors and designs that will coordinate with outfits that are already in the store.

If you can, talk to the owner about taking some pictures of a few dresses and return a few days later with some jewelry samples to show. Don’t stick with one design in different colors, though. You don’t know the owner’s taste in jewelry and you’ll want to give them a variety to look at with the hopes of making a sale.

How to Sell Your Jewelry

Make sure when you take your jewelry to a new location that everything is priced, packaged and ready to go. Also, take along a copy of the inventory you’ll be leaving at the store to save yourself trouble later. You can offer the owner a percentage of each sale. Just be sure to mark up your jewelry accordingly.

Another option for selling your handmade jewelry is to sell the pieces at a discounted price to the owner. This will allow them to mark up the price to what they think is acceptable in their store.
