Season 13: It’s Conda vs. Daphne on This Week’s “The Biggest Loser”

Last week on “The Biggest Loser,” the Red Team again proved to be a team of discontent, with Conda causing trouble and the elimination of Adrian. As the Red Team fell apart, the Black Team continued working together with very little drama. Daphne expected not to see her brother when the teams reunited, so it was shaping up to be another tense week on the ranch. The teams had to work on a common excuse for not losing weight at this time of the year — “I’ll wait until after the holidays.”

The show opened with the Black Team sitting around the kitchen table. Daphne’s face told a tale of a woman who know that her brother would not walk in the door. Everyone else in the room had an awkward silence. Conda walked in first with her usual devious smirk, followed by the rest of the Red Team. Of course, Conda served as the spokesman, acting like a big baby and making rude remarks. Roy was the only one who seemed to be a little sympathetic.

Alison met the teams by the pool with two heart-shaped boxes. She informed them that Bob and Dolvett would pick one person from their team to go home for a week. That person’s weight would count for the whole team, and their trainers accompanied by their trainer. Dolvett chose Conda, and Bob chose Daphne.

In addition, the team that highest weight-loss percentage at the weigh in would give a one-pound advantage to their at-home teammate. Conda and Daphne made a tentative truce. Some of the contestants were not happy with their trainer picks. Chris said she thought it was unfair for Bob to pick Daphne instead of her.

Bob and Dolvett met the families. The funniest part happened when Dolvett met Conda’s family, and someone yelled “How’s she acting?” He also talked to Conda’s mother and sister, and he learned what’s behind her attitude. Bob made his intentions known to her family — getting revenge on Conda. I wasn’t surprised that other family members of Conda and Daphne struggled with weight. It seems to be a common scenario on “The Biggest Loser.”

Bob’s Team tried to put together a circuit without him and ran into a lot of problems. They depended on Bob a lot, so they didn’t know how to deal with it. The Red Team was already at work while the Black Team deliberated. Without Conda around, Kim took on the role as team leader. When the Black Team finally came to the gym, they were lackluster and didn’t work with much energy.

At home, though, Daphne worked out with gusto and focus. Anger and frustration can fire up a person to work hard. Bob kept drilling it in her head about what happened to her brother. Bob even sat down with Daphne and her family; she revealed that she had atrial fibrillation and slept with a CPAP mask.

Meanwhile, Dolvett took Conda outdoors for her workout. He wanted to show her that she could get a good workout at home using her surroundings. Dolvett had letters from the Red Team, designed to motivate Conda as she worked out at home. He didn’t want her to feel like she was alone. Dolvett treated Conda to a night out with friend while he babysat her daughter Brooklyn.

At the ranch, the team met Alison on the beach for this week’s challenge. The prize was getting letters from home. They had to dig under three logs before heading toward the finish line, dragging along a dummy. In addition to the letters, they would win another one-pound advantage. Some team members got stuck under the logs. Both teams were pretty evenly matched at first, but the Red Team took the lead, seemingly head for another team challenge victory. The Black Team caught up, though. The Red Team worked together and prevailed.

Dolvett brought Conda back to her old high school, the place where her life changed. In high school, her parent’s separation and divorce shattered her world. She said she pretended that everything was fine at that time and built up a shield to protect her from the pain. It was the first time I had a little sympathy for Conda.

Conda’s last-chance workout was with a girl’s high-school team. Bob had Daphne walk all the steps of Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) in less than an hour; it is currently the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. The Black Team also sent her encouraging letters, just as the Red Team did for Conda. Daphne walked up the stairs in 58 minutes.

Conda and Daphne returned for the weigh in. Bob’s Black Team weighed in first. They had generally low numbers, losing 33 total pounds for a 2.23 weight-loss percentage. The Red Team needed more 27 pounds to get the other one-pound advantage. It looked like a shoe-in when Kim lost nine pounds and Mark lost 10 pounds.

Finally, Conda and Daphne got on the scale. Daphne lost 12 pounds for a 5.08 percent weight loss. Conda needed more than 10 pounds to beat Daphne. She lost exactly 10, and with the two-pound advantage, the team had a 4.71 weight-loss percentage. The Red Team headed back to the elimination room. Kim had immunity for her weight loss efforts. They sent Roy home by unanimous vote. He took it in stride. He weighed 230 pounds at home.

I have to say that I was happy that Daphne beat Conda at the weigh in. She did it for her team, for herself and for her brother. At the same time, Conda finally revealed some of the reason for her combative behavior with other people on the ranch. The Red Team also proved for another week that they can work without Dolvett. Hopefully, more excuses with crumble in the coming weeks.
