Right T-shirt Color Reduces Risk of Sunburn, Bee Sting and Lyme Disease

The color T-shirt you select to wear (and put on your kids) today can play a role in your safety. Choosing the right color t-shirt can mean the difference between a fun day outdoors without incident, or a day filled with red, itchy blisters, dodging bees or worse.

There is a ‘right’ color t-shirt to wear to the beach to protect against sunburn, a ‘right’ color t-shirt to wear to the park to protect against bee stings and a ‘right’ color t-shirt to wear while roaming in wooded areas to protect against Lyme disease carrying ticks and West Nile virus carrying mosquitoes.

Wear A Blue T-shirt to the Beach

White t-shirts have always been the popular choice to use a beach cover-ups. White reflects the sun and makes a tan look even darker. Popular color choice is not the right choice. White cotton t-shirts offer very little protection against the sun’s UV rays, and when a white t-shirt get wets, the UV protection dips to nearly zero. A serious sunburn can still occur to skin through a white t-shirt. Choose a blue t-shirt for the best sunburn protection while enjoying a day at the beach.

Wear a Neutral Beige to Protect Against Bee Stings

If you want to enjoy a day in the park without having to dodge bees all day, don’t dress in colors that make you appear to be an oversized flower. A red, purple or tie-dyed t-shirt are floral colors to a bee (and other nectar eating, stinging insects) and the bees will try to attack what they perceive to be nectar rich flowers, which is really you in a bright colored t-shirt.

Wear a neutral beige t-shirt to prevent bee stings. Cream colored or white t-shirts won’t stimulate bees and will help avoid being stung by a bee, but those colors should not be worn on a bright, sunny day lest a sunburn occur.

Go Bright for Wooded Adventures

The colors naturally seen in wooded areas are dark greens, browns and blacks. Dark colors which attract Lyme disease carrying ticks and West Nile virus carrying mosquitoes. Repel these woodland insects by a wearing bright yellow t-shirt, a color not naturally found in the woods. Plus if a crawling bug or tick does get on you, a bright yellow t-shirt makes it easier to spot before it has a chance to bite you.
