Review: Vanity Fair Premium Plates

My wife and I both hate doing dishes (even with the dishwasher) and, even if we didn’t mind that chore, with both of us working, we don’t always get the time to keep up with them.

As a result of this, we tend to go through paper plates and bowls pretty regularly. In fact, that is something that is almost always on our shopping list.

A couple days ago, my wife did some shopping and came home with a package of Vanity Fair Premium Plates. At first, I didn’t think anything of them because I figured they were just regular paper plates. But, after using them, I found they were, in fact, something a bit different that what we’ve used in the past.

I’m not really sure what they are made out of (it kind of seems like paper but it might be plastic) but, whatever it is, it definitely looks and feels different than the plates we’re used to using. The material is harder and the plates actually look a bit more like the ceramic plates we have in our cupboard (or sink).

My overall opinion of these plates, however, is a bit mixed.

Because they are made to be harder, the plates do have some advantages over the paper plates (and even some plastic plates) we would normally buy. For one, they don’t leak. I like this because it means I can have something like baked beans without having to worry about doubling up the plate (we go through enough of these without having to use two at once). I also can cut a steak on them without it being as easy to cut through the plate.

And, of course, it is somewhat nice using a plate that looks more like real dinner ware. To be honest, it’s not something that would necessarily make me purchase the plates. But, it’s an added bonus.

However, one thing I have noticed about these plates is, because they are made to be firmer, they also don’t have as much flexibility in them. And, if you overload the plate, there’s a good chance it will actually start to crack. In fact, I managed to crack a couple of them just getting them out of the packaging.

Because of this, it is only a product I would recommend if you are able to find the plates at a reasonable price and don’t plan on overloading them with food. Otherwise, you aren’t really getting much more than you would from a regular paper plate.
