Replacing a CPU Fan is a Breeze

When my home computer started humming uncontrollably and the CPU case became hot to the touch, there was no doubt the cooling fan was malfunctioning. This is a computer repair I’ve had to make a few times over the years, so I was comfortable handling it myself rather then disconnecting it and taking it to the computer repair store.

With a few tools and about 10 minutes of time, you too can replace the CPU fan with little or no difficulty.

Finding Replacement Fan:

There are lots of places to buy a new CPU fan, but I go to a computer store and buy a used one. They are usually around $15 and will last a long time. Best Buy and other department stores usually sell them in their electronics department as well. You also can find some deals on eBay and other online auction sites. Just buy from a reputable store where you can return it if it doesn’t work.

Preparing your CPU:

Turn off your computer and unplug the CPU from the electrical connection. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove all the screws from the CPU case. A can of compressed air will help you clean out the inside of the CPU case – and I’ve never seen one that didn’t need a good cleaning. It’s amazing how much dust will collect inside. You can also buy a small computer vacuum to suck out the dust particles from inside the CPU.

Connecting the new Fan:

The fan connects with two wires that can be easily removed. Be sure to match up your replacement fan with the one you are removing so there is no doubt which wires go where. Make sure the wires are securely fastened. Plug the CPU into the wall socket and turn it on. Make sure the fan is working properly and, of course, keep your fingers clear of the inside of the CPU during the test. If the fan is working fine, turn the computer off and unplug again. Put the back on and screw into place.

You can now safely plug your CPU in and turn the computer on. Voile! You have just completed your first computer repair and all in less than 10 minutes.
