Remodeling Your Bathroom to Beat the Winter Blues

Remodeling your bathroom can seem like such a huge chore! A majority of people will save it as the last room they remodel in their homes. The winter months are a perfect time to take that eyesore on; you’re stuck inside, watching more television than normal, and if you’re anything like me gaining an extra ten pounds.

You don’t have to rip out pipes and tile to give your bathroom a nice remodel. These projects are easy and fun; a splash of color will drive those winter blues away.

Paint and Texture
Isn’t color amazing? It can soothe or excite, lift your spirits, or even make you feel hungry (red). My bathroom is a place that I go to calm down after a long day, enjoy a bubble bath and candles, and treat myself to facials and pedicures. I want it to be a warm and soothing place that I can escape to.

The winter months have a way of making people feel a little blue. There’s nothing green and a definite lack of sunshine. Try giving your bathroom a splash of paint in earth tones; use spa greens, warm browns, blues, and even throw some rich grays in. A nice way to add depth to the room is to purchase a paint texturizer. This is normally found in the paint section and poured directly into the paint. Accessorize with plants, wood, stone, and a lot of extra texture in towels and mats. This will give you a feeling of being outside in the warmer months. White accessories such as candles or a vase will give the bathroom a crisp clean look. I love being outside myself, and my bathroom reflects it.

Bathroom Floor
If you have expensive tile that’s in great shape don’t touch it. This project is for those of us who have laminate or fake tiles. Most bathrooms aren’t extremely large and a new floor won’t be expensive. I remodeled my floor for under $150 last winter. We had old laminate that I hated with a passion. I found tiles that stick down at Home Depot; they feel real, you can even grout in between them, and one box of 25 is only around $30. Start in the farthest corner and use spacers if you are going to grout. You can’t cut this tile with a box cutter but you can use a power or a jig saw to get the job done. This simple project will give your bathroom an entirely new look. Using a stone looking tile in gray or light brown will fit well with your nature theme.

Out with the New
You may think this sounds backwards. Replace as much as you can; vanity, cabinets, or even bathtub with something distressed or vintage. I replaced my cookie cutter tub with a garden tub, my shiny vanity top with distressed wood, and my white sink with a sink cut from river rock. Finding the perfect item to complement your bathroom can be fun as well. Check out local flea markets, antique shops, and auctions.

To replace the bathtub, you may need assistance from a plumber or at least someone who has experience. It isn’t complicated, you’ll just need to be able to dislodge the old tub without ruining your tiles and attach the appropriate pipes.

Don’t let the winter stop you from remodeling your home. There isn’t a better time to do it than now. You don’t want to be stuck inside in the summer months.
