Recycled Cereal Box Craft Projects

Recycle cereal boxes and create usable craft items for around the home. The multiple sizes of cereal boxes, including the round cereal box for oatmeal, make excellent storage containers for such things as mail, files, notebooks, small toys, money and more.

Desk Organizer

Select a rectangular cereal box. Draw a 45 degree line from the top corner of the largest side on the box to the opposite edge. Flip the box over and draw an identical line making sure that the angle points in the same direction. Connect the lower two points. Cut along the drawn line with a craft knife or a sharp pair of scissors. Cover the box with wrapping paper, wallpaper, fabric or contact paper. Make sure to cut the covering large enough to fold the top edge over the cut edge of the box by 1-inch.

Paper Organizer

Select three to five cereal boxes the same size. Measure the distance from the top to the bottom of the box. Divide the number in half. Measure from the bottom of the box and place dots at the halfway point. Connect the dots then cut along the line with a craft knife or sharp pair of scissors. Repeat the process on the remaining boxes making sure each box is the same size. Glue and stack the boxes on top of one another so the openings all face the same direction. Allow the glue to dry. Cover the outside of the multi-layered paper organizer with fabric, wallpaper, contact paper, wrapping paper or newspaper.

Bank

Cover the outside of an oatmeal container, lid and rim with the desired paper or fabric. Measure and mark a rectangular opening ¼-inch wide and 1- to 1 ½-inch long. Cut out the rectangle with a craft knife. Add adornments or decorations to the outside of the bank.

Note Pad Covers

Cut used printer paper into 4-inch squares. Stack the paper into groups of 20 sheets. Staple along one edge to hold the stack together. Measure and cut a piece of cardboard from a cereal box that is 4 ½-inches wide by 8 ½-inches long. Cover one side of the cardboard with the desired material. Match the 4 ½-inch edges. Crease firmly along the fold. Measure down from the fold ¼-inch and mark. Repeat the process on the opposite side. Fold along the mark and crease firmly. Squeeze a line of glue along the fold line. Place the staple edge of the paper so it lines up with the fold line in the cardboard. Fold the front and back closed. Place a weight on the folded edge and allow the glue to dry.
