Recap: ‘Castle,’ Season 4, Episode 1, ‘Rise’

“Castle,” Season 4, Episode 1, “Rise” starts off rather kinetically as Beckett is taken to the ER to be worked over by her boyfriend Josh. She dies once, but as she is too tough to bother with that, comes back.

Spoilers surely follow.

The show uses Beckett’s long convalescence to effect changes that were made necessary by the death of Capt. Montgomery. While Ryan and Esposito, with Castle’s help, try to run down the shooter who almost ended Beckett, they reach a number of dead ends. They have to also conceal some of the evidence as it implicates Montgomery, whose involvement in the conspiracy they want buried along with him.

Beckett returns to the precinct to find it being ruled over by Capt. Victoria “Iron” Gates, who is not someone who puts up with nonsense, including a writer who likes to pretend to be a detective. The shooting has been placed into cold case, but is still being looked at on the side without Gates’ knowledge. In the meantime, the team has a high society shooting to look at.

Beckett is clearly not on her game, we assume being a bit shaky due to having been shot. One of the dead ends is the fact that the killings that included Beckett’s mother were paid out of a now defunct bank whose archived records were conveniently destroyed in a warehouse fire. Beckett suspects the firefighter who investigated the blaze was paid off, but has no proof.

Castle, whose new “Nikki Heat” book has just been released, uses his influence with the mayor to get back on the squad as a consultant, much to Gates’ displeasure. This is fortunate because he provides the insight that cracks the high society murder case. It involves the real killer hiding under the bed where his victim lay dead after having placed the gun in the hands of her unconscious boyfriend.

Castle also has to deal with an irate Alexis, who is now afraid of losing her father because of his crime fighting hobby. He gets a call from a mysterious stranger with Washington connections to urge him to cool Beckett’s quest for her shooter off for a while for her own safety. He has some records Montgomery collected that will keep the conspirators in check — for now.

Beckett pretended not to remember some of the details of the shooting, which included Castle confessing his love for her over her prone body. But, as she confesses to her shrink, she remembers everything. Now, at last, the real source of her disquiet.
