Play Kitchen Pans and Bowls

Using ordinary and inexpensive craft supplies many of us crafters can now reproduce lots of things we see in the store – like dishes and foods for a play kitchen. We’ve even begun to recycle things that would have gone in the trash into nice play things for the pretend kitchens. Next, we’re going to start making pots and pans.

You can easily make baking dishes, bowls, pizza pans and more by using foil. Make a baking dish by tearing two pieces of foil to be the same size. Stack them on top of each other. Fold one edge of the foil up a couple of inches to create one side of a baking dish. Do the same to the other sides. If you fold the foil over several inches on each side, you’ll create a deep pan; fold it over just a couple of inches to make a shallow pan.

Pull all four sides of the foil up then pinch and fold the corners to fit. When you’re happy with the shape just fold the top edges of the pan down to create a smooth lip, all the way around the top of the pan. You can make these pans square or rectangular, deep or shallow. You can even use a pan you already have as a pattern. Turn the pan upside-down and lay the foil over it. Shape it like the pan then pinch the corners to keep it that way.

Use a bowl from your own kitchen to make foil bowls for a pretend kitchen. Cut two or more foil circles to make each bowl. One layer of foil makes a very flimsy bowl so it’s a good idea to use at least two foil pieces. Lay the foil over a bowl to shape it. Just make tiny creases in the bowl, here and there, all the way around. Remove the real bowl and fold the top edges of the foil bowl down to create a finished look around the edges.

You can create bowls, pans, baking dishes and more simply by placing foil over that object, or inside that object, then molding the foil to fit. Make tiny foil cups, as sauce or dip cups, by using lids from prescriptions or other products as the molds. Or, cut the bottom section from a Styrofoam cup, wrap it in foil, and you have a different type of container.

Make a round pizza dish by covering a take-out pizza cardboard with foil. Or, cut a large, round circle of foil, stack two or more of these, then carefully roll the edges to make a pizza pan.

Your child already has a lot of fun with the pretend kitchen, but with the new pans, even more dishes can be created and served. And, if they happen to get ruined, there is an endless supply at home in the real kitchen.
