Pincushion Ring

Can’t keep up with your pincushion? Have limited space so you don’t want a bulky pincushion? Make a pincushion ring! With it, you can keep your needles and pins at hand, but you won’t have to keep up with the pincushion, because you’ll be wearing it the whole time. A pincushion ring is really simple to make and will serve you well for many years.

A pincushion ring can easily be made when you use a soda bottle lid. Take the lid from a 20oz, or two-liter bottle, to start making the ring. Hold a nail with a pair of pliers, and the pliers with a potholder. Heat the nail up on the stove burner or another heat source. Push the nail into two areas of the top of the lid, spacing them far apart.

Use elastic cord to make the ring stay on your finger. Cut a piece of cord to be long enough to go all the way around your finger. With the lid standing on a table, thread one end of the cord through one hole, and the other end through the other hole, from outside the cap, to inside the lid. Tie a tiny knot in each end of the cord, on the inside of the lid.

Create a ball of cotton balls, foam, or other such materials. The ball should be slightly larger in diameter than the soda lid. Put the ball in the lid and drape a circle of cloth over it. The fabric can be nearly any type and should be large enough to cover the cotton as well as the lid.

Begin dispensing hot glue into the inner area of the lid, pushing the cotton or foam out of the way, then trapping the very edge of the cloth between the cotton and the inside top of the lid. Scoot over a little, push the cotton back, and dispense another dot of glue. Continue doing this until you go all the way around the inside top of the lid, and until the fabric edges are completely glued.

Slide the ring onto your finger and start using the unusual pincushion immediately. Wear it on your less predominant hand, on the middle finger or ring finger, as you sew. The ring easily holds pins and needles of assorted sizes. It’s very helpful and takes up little room. Now the biggest challenge will be to keep up with such a tiny pincushion.
