Penny Necklace

Many people think that it’s against the law to deface a coin but, actually, that’s not exactly true. It’s against the law to deface a coin if you’re going to use it in a fraudulent manner. But if you’re doing a craft project, there’s no law that you are breaking if you change the look of said coin. Since that’s true, you’ll have a great time using a coin which you already have as the base for making a new necklace. Whether the coin is a penny, a dime, a nickel, or another, you’ll love a gorgeous necklace you can make with it.

You have to poke a hole in the coin and that’s where the defacing comes in – even though it is legal to do so. You can either hammer a tiny nail through the coin, use a screw, or use a small drill bit. It’s a good idea to bash the coin a couple of times with a hammer, after making the hole, to ensure the coin lies flat; you can sometimes warp the coin while attempting to make the hole.

Choose a sticker or even a picture to use on the new coin. Choose something where the main part of the design will fit onto the front of the coin. You can even go online and choose a picture, resize it to be the size of the coin, and print it out to use. Or, cut a design from a piece of fabric, scrapbook paper, or even gift wrap. Take the chosen picture, lay the coin on it, and draw around it. Cut out the circle and glue it to the coin. If you’re using a sticker simply stick it to the front of the coin. If the image covers the hole, poke a hole in the picture or sticker, so that it coincides with the hole in the coin.

Cut a very thin circle of cork to be the size of the coin and lay the coin on it. Sprinkle embossing powder over the coin. Amazing Glaze embossing powder is available online or at local craft stores. The tiny crystals, when heated, will form a glass coating over the coin and image. Sprinkle on the embossing powder and follow the package instructions to heat it.

After the embossing powder has set you’ll have a stunning necklace that’s definitely a one-of-a-kind. Use needle nose pliers to attach a tiny ring in the hole of the coin so that it can be hung on a chain. You’ll be proud to wear this beautiful necklace which you’ll be proud to wear.
