So who is the mastermind behind this radical concept? A lawyer by the name of Robert Applebaum, a man who understands just how crippling student loan debt can be thanks to his own experiences with student loans.

Applebaum has been charging bravely ahead into these relatively uncharted waters for over 2 years now, and his proposal for forgiving student loan debt is making some serious headway. Besides financially battered students and graduates, Applebaum’s ideas also have the support of politicians and celebrities. This headway is undoubtedly aided by the Occupy Wall Street and other Occupy events that are taking place all across the United States.

People are tired of struggling, frustrated with being saddled by a mountain of debt for daring to better themselves through education. That, coupled with loan shark rates, and often predatory practices, make student loans quite a looming monster in the shadows. Unlike credit card debt, or other forms of consumer debt, student loans burden the loan holder for a lifetime. Since student loans are not typically eligible to be discharged through bankruptcy or other financial means, often the only way out of student loans is decades of high rate payments or death.

Tales of lives put on hold and dreams deferred or forgotten riddle the Forgive Student Loan Debt website, and heartbreaking stories of massive debt are woven throughout the comment sections of the forgive student loan debt petition. Reading these stories of desperation and defeat, one can’t help but wonder why anyone would bother heading off to college knowing that they might be saddled with huge debt while struggling to find a high paying job just to make ends meet.

As the middle class moves towards extinction, and the gap between rich and poor grows wider, one cannot help but think that Applebaum’s ideas for student loan forgiveness have some serious merit.
