Now on DVD: Nosferatu

Synopsis: Based on the book Dracula, this silent movie follows the vampire Count Orlok (Max Schreck) buys a house in Germany and becomes obsessed with the woman living across from him while preying on those who live in the village.

What I like about this movie: I have seen plenty of vampire movies, including quite a few classics and Max Schreck’s Count Orlok is easily the creepiest one there is. Bela Lugosi might be more famous for his portrayal of Count Dracula. But, if you are looking for a vampire that will give you nightmares, even 80 plus years later, this is the film to watch.

Even though the movie is loosely based off of Bram Stoker’s book, I do like how the filmmakers took some liberties with the script such as changing the location and even how they have the vampire die. This does set it apart from other Dracula-inspired vampire movies.

What I didn’t like about this movie: Much like with Lugosi in Dracula, without Schreck in the lead role, I don’t think this movie would be as memorable as it is. Once you get rid of the incredibly creepy vampire, the film is actually kind of dull compared to other vampire movies; including quite a few black and white ones.

Let’s put it this way, I tried watching this with my 7-year-old daughter this weekend (she has wanted to see it ever since seeing “Nosferatu” on an episode of Spongebob Squarepants). She only made it about a quarter of the way through. Not because she was scared; because she was bored.

Final Opinion: The movie is a classic. But, it’s only because of the lead character. I recommend watching it but I also caution you not to expect too much from it.

Average Netflix Grade: 3.6 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 3 stars.
