My Puppy Valentine

It’s funny how we think of Valentine’s Day in a certain way. We plan or expect or wish for and at the end of the day we figured this certain thing would happen for our loved ones or for us.

They should call it preconceived day and I know there are I Hate Valentine’s Day Parties and people vow never to buy from the stores that make money on these holidays. Or the other saying, “They know I love them and it should be Valentine’s everyday!”

As a mom I loved giving my kids little gifts for that day…letting them know I love them. Now the kids are all older children most who have valentines of their own.

Although a nice box of candy hearts or some chocolate can often foot the bill. The reality is it is a day to recognize those we love. A gesture, kind word, handmade card, or a hug should spell a perfect valentines day.

One Valentine’s Day I was in the hospital with my mom, she was very ill. My kids did not get Valentines that year from me because I was hundreds of miles away.

The day came and they called me to say Happy Valentines and it was so precious. I was away from home, helping my mom, and missed them so. At the time I also had a sweet puppy Boston Terrier named Max.

My daughter knowing I was struggling started to plan a way for me to have a Valentine. Before Skype and other certain technology this took some doing.

At the end of what was a hard day I got an email. It was from my puppy valentine. Just a simple picture it was so funny to think of a grown woman with a puppy valentine but at the time as a single parent it was so sweet and I was so grateful to have that moment.

I have since lost my Mom and Max but I still have the email with the picture of my true valentine little Max. Now it may seem crazy and yes I am aware he is “just a dog” to most people but without that little simple photo I would have had a dark February 14th. Call me the crazy dog lady I wear it proudly and embrace it! So all you pet lovers out there do not hesitate to have your Valentine be your pet. After all they are the quintessential example of unconditional love, trust, and companionship. So this February 14th share it with a loved pet as they are there for us and remember if someone calls you a crazy pet lover embrace it and be proud to have such a wonderful companion by your side!

I will be thinking of my little puppy Valentine.
