COMMENTARY | For centuries people have talked about the end times, using natural disasters to highlight their insistence that the coming of the end is near. Some of our politicians have decided to jump on the bandwagon recently; not surprisingly, Michele Bachmann is leading the pack.
Bachmann tells her constituents that God is trying to get the attention of the White House, but they aren’t listening; therefore, God must be creating the recent earthquakes and hurricanes in order to produce a bigger effect. Apparently, God only wants what Bachmann and the ultra right conservatives deem appropriate for America, and he is very angry that we aren’t all just like her.
At a campaign rally in Poinciana, Fla., Saturday, Bachmann told a group of senior citizens that the hurricane was “an act of God that Washington should heed,” according to Human Events
Spinning the hurricane and recent earthquakes into a message from God that we had better change things in the White House to be just the way He wants them may have been all for show, but Bachmann is really taking things too far. She sounds like a leader of a cult who is trying to brainwash new people into accepting her beliefs, and the only beliefs that can be right are hers. Why? Because she so obviously knows exactly what God wants.
I don’t believe she does, and the idea that our country should only follow the path that a small piece of America believes in is not what our country is about.
Bachmann is showing the signs of a true cult leader in some aspects. She is claiming that she is the only solution to our problems, stating that gas prices will fall and the economy will see improvement if she is elected. Her claims are empty promises that lure supporters who don’t dig enough to find out the true facts.
Implying that she is important enough to be God’s true messenger, as well as trying to put fear into people who believe that God may be punishing us, is highly irresponsible at the least. The American people have enough to worry about right now. On top of the natural disasters, the failing economy, and unemployment, now we’re supposed to worry that if we aren’t ultra conservative like she is that we’ll be the next to be hit by the wrath of God?
If, as some people say, these acts are created by God as a message, perhaps that message is that we need to have love and respect for all people, not just those who follow one particular path.
