Living in a Toxic Home

Living in a Toxic Home

Is it possible that you and your family are living in a toxic home? When most people think of a toxic home, they think of something they might see with a yellow tape around it, people dressed in white or bright orange space looking suits entering a home with breathing masks on. This home has possibly been condemned and they are getting ready to tear it down.

In reality, your home that you feel safe in is probably more toxic than you think. Studies have shown that indoor air quality of homes is 3-5 time worse than that of outside air. This is because the designs of most homes were based on energy efficiency and therefore do not provide for good ventilation. We are creating this bad air by not using eco-friendly building supplies in our homes and causing chemical reactions to occur. Also, children come home from school with germs that get into our air and cause more toxins to form. For those of us with pets, what about the germs, dirt, and odors they bring in?

Generally breathing is something we do not have to think about. We just do it, and we do it a lot. You probably do not think about the type of things you inhale when you are breathing in your home. Some things you might be breathing can include VOC’s. These are found in paints, household cleaners, pesticides, glues, adhesives, and the list goes on.

These indoor air pollutants can cause many problems that include respiratory problems. You might also have heard of sick building syndrome which is also a cause of poor indoor air quality. Some symptoms of SBS are dizziness, headaches, sore throat, nausea, fatigue, etc.

Unless your family spends a lot time outside, they are probably exposed to a lot of these things. The good thing about this is that there is a solution to a healthier home. Today there are so many different things you can build your home with that are environmentally friendly and non-toxic. You can also increase your homes ventilation, add UV lighting to your air system to help kill toxins, use air purifiers and replace the filter as needed, or even use dehumidifiers.

There is also a solution to not having those VOC’s. You can use low or no voc paint in your home, replace your household cleaners with vinegar, eliminate the use of chemical pesticides, etc.

You can always find a natural solution to chemical problems. By changing the air quality in your home, you can also change your health and look forward to a better life.
