“League of Legends:” Why You Should Be Playing It

Developed by Riot Games, League of Legends has been out since October 27, 2009. Two years later, what started out as a small community has blossomed into a multi-million dollar franchise with over 15 millions registered users. League of Legends, or LoL for short, is a MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) style game. It’s free to play and heavily inspired by DotA, a Warcraft 3 mod.

What Makes It Special

Riot does not sell power. Where most free to play games fail, LoL actually excels. Often, free to play games offer a significant advantage to paying customers. Those who can’t afford to spend money on the game tend to feel cheated. Riot however, only sells cosmetic things, such as champion skins, which offer no power advantage. High quality. Just because there is no fee, doesn’t mean a lower quality game. Since players can try the content out before deciding whether or not they want to spend money on it, Riot is pressured to make sure they deliver top notch content that people will want. Customization. Unlike some of the similar MOBAs around, LoL has runes and masteries. As your summoner level increases, which is basically your profile, you can unlock runes and masteries. These give small advantages to your champion in game and add an extra level of customization and strategy. Openness with the community. Except for occasionally not giving a release date for new content, Riot tends to be very open and transparent with their players. Frequent updates. On average, every two weeks the game is updated with new content. This can be anything from a new champion, new skins, or simply balance changes. LoL is forever changing so it doesn’t get stale like some other games.

That should be enough incentive to at least give the game a look. Millions of fans can’t be wrong, so if your not already playing go ahead and give it a try.
