Labor Day Goings-on in Midland, Texas

Labor Day arrives on Monday, September 5. Here in Midland, Texas people will undoubtedly still be waiting for a break in the miserable summer heat, which has set records across the state and delivered a drought of unprecedented severity.

The weekend leading up to Labor Day provides some heat-beating entertainment in the form of the Midland Community Theater, which is showing The Dinner Party on Friday, September 2 and Saturday, September 3, at 8:00 PM. While tickets do not seem to be available online yet, there is box office infomation, as well as an e-mail address, provided for theatergoers.

Should an evening out with a touch of class appeal to your tastes, make a stop at the Midland Community Theater a post-dinner must. Two of the fanciest restaurants in town, The Garlic Press and Venezia Restaurant, are within mere blocks of the theater. There are also less expensive eateries nearby, including a pair of popular Mexican restaurants.

Should the evening be unseasonably cool, a bridge crosses Jal Draw between Midland Community Theater and Midland College and provides a nice avenue for a stroll. A romantic walk toward the college as the crowds try to exit the cramped MCT parking lot may be just the ticket to a perfect evening!

If an evening at the theater is not enough excitement for your Labor Day weekend, check out the Museum of the Southwest, which will have a Tale of Two Cities traveling photography exhibit on display between September 2nd and October 23rd. Another exhibit, Torn From Home, is on display through September 12.

For those who are fans of all things equestrian, check out the West Texas Horse Expo, which is held over Labor Day weekend at the Midland Horseshoe Arena at 2514 Arena Trail. Visitors can see equestrian performances and hear good music as well!

Finally, should you be a baseball fanatic and a follower of the local minor league team, the Midland Rockhounds, the team is duking it out against the Frisco Roughriders in Frisco on Labor Day. At 6:00 PM the two Texan teams will clash at the Frisco home base of the Dr. Pepper Ballpark. So if you’re a fan of America’s pastime and you’re no averse to some highway driving, load up the coolers and funny hats and make your way to the away game to cheer on the local boys!

Me, I’ll probably just be trying to beat the heat! But don’t be surprised if you see me at ol’ Midland Community Theater on Saturday evening…it’s a favorite spot!
